My i30 docking station has no sound coming out of it. Nothing changed, it just stop one day. Suggestions?
I'd have to see the circuitry to be certain, but it's a good possibility that an output driver transistor shorted and blew the speaker amplifier power supply fuse. (I'm assuming the amplifier power supply is fused separately from the power to the rest of the docking station.)
The troubleshooting procedure (the docking station MUST be unplugged!) is to remove the cover and look for a fuse that is likely to be for speaker power (there is almost certainly one for the AC power coming in; it will be close to the power cord attach point; this is not the one we're looking for unless everything in the i30 is dead. Once you identify the fuse(s), check them for continuity with an ohmmeter. If you find an open (blown) fuse, trace circuit to the speaker amplifier. Use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance from the speaker output to fuse, and from the same terminal to the opposite polarity power supply (Most audio output amplifiers use both positive and negative power supply voltages.) A shorted output transistor will read very low resistance from the speaker to one of the supplies. If one of the transistors is bad, both must be replaced because the other one was abused (enough current to blow the fuse went through it.) In many newer audio systems, the output transistors are inside a power amplifier module, so replacing the module automatically replaces both transistors.
