Kitcchen Aid mixer making a grinding noise

Hi - I have the Kitchen Aid Ultra Power 300 stand mixer.  While making batter for banana bread this morning it started making an awful grinding sound.  The mixer still turned, but the noise is unbearable and the unit started to get very hot. I've had it for 12 years now and use it only once or twice a month, cleaning it and putting it away after each use.  Any thoughts?

Thank you!

my mixer started having a low level grinding noise as if something was loose and then stopped turning on all together. Is there a manual to describe disassembly of the mixer?

How to use food grinder attachment

The mixer's planetary is not disconnected when the meat grinder is attached and continues to turn.

If the noise you hear only occurs when the grinder is in place, then the grinder may be assumed to be the cause. Consult the meat grinder's instructions and make sure that nothing is loose or overtightened.

My Kitchen aid Ksm90 mixer got a little noisy, then it just wouldn't even turn on. What could be wrong with it?

You have possibly blown the fuse gear. Need a bit more info on the noise. If you turn it on slow and help the planetary does it try go get itself going?

Makes a grinding noise at higher speeds

If it is leaking you are going to have to go inside the gearbox to change the grease so whatever is wrong inside may become obvious when you take it apart. Remove accessory cap from the front and look for any dryish grindings inside there.

I have a 275W Classic Plus, about 5 years old. I've never done any maintenance on it. It gets used several times per week for the basics (banana bread/cake batter, cookie dough) and also at least once a...

There are lots of places to be looking, first thing I would look at would be under the rear cover to make sure the two nuts that hold the rear motor bearing housing in place are nipped up. You don't wring the neck on these nuts, if you over tighten them you will deform the rear bearing housing.
If you can find someone local who has been doing these mixers for a while they will be able to give it a once over. It's unlikely to be expensive. Best people to ask is Kitchen Aid, they should know who does their warranty work in your area. If you are in new Zealand it will be me.

Grinding noise when running.

It very likely sounds like a plastic gear that is worn. If this is the case, then a replacement is very likely stocked by the manufacturer only.

I advise opening the unit to identify which one you need, then 'phone the manufacturer with the make model and year of the product.

If they say they do not stock it - then I'm afraid that's as far as you can go with this.

Is 300 w mixer powerful enough to mix bread dough?

Your mixer is easily able to handle the kneading of bread dough. Please advise:

9 cups of all purpose white flour, maximum.

6 cups of specialty flour, maximum. This is any flour besides all purpose white.

Bread doughs are only to be needed on speed 2, and never for longer than 7 minutes.

This is all stated in the Use and Care guide for the mixer itself. If these guidelines are not followed, it may lead to a product failure.

Grinding Noise

If it's metallic sound you are loosing teeth on a gear or two.  This is caused by lack of lubricant or simply fatigue of the material of the gears.  Don't use it, you can get metal flakes in your food.

Take it in to a repair shop and have it fixed.  The money spent is well worth it because if done correctly will last another 12 years.
