I just received my machine in the mail yesterday (ordered from Amazon). The presser foot was loose in the box when I opened it. I reattached the presser foot, but the whole needle mechanism is out of alignment with the hole in the presser foot and bobbin opening (hits on the left). The mechanism seems to be on an arm that can be adjusted but I can't figure out how to make the adjustment so that the needle doesn't hit.

Check the needle to be sure it is not bent.
If this is not the problem, you will need to choose another foot to use until the machine can be repaired by a professional.

Remove the foot - does the needle hit the needle plate?
Is the needle bent?
If the answer is no to both questions, it could be the machine needs to be taken in for repairs.

Thanks,
I have spoken with a Brother dealer in South Bend and plan on taking it there.

This machine has a built in needle position adjustment.
Check your owners manual.

The bobbin case may not be correctly installed and iscausing the misalignment and breakage.
Look through the maintenance section for cleaning and lubricating. This willalso provide info and a picture for setting the bobbin case back into theshuttle.
No manual? Singer and Brother have free downloads at their Internet sites.Other brands are iffy as to being able to download without paying.
If you do not have (or cannot obtain) a manual, raise the needle to its highestposition and this will align the shuttle race for the bobbin case. There shouldbe a groove in the side of the race for the arm/wing on the bobbin case to fitinto.
If cleaning the area below the needle plate and bobbin area along with correctinsertion of the bobbin into the bobbin case and the bobbin case into theshuttle do not solve the problem, then you have a bigger issue - the timing andneeds to be adjusted (not for a novice) and requires a trip to the shop forserviced.
If that doesn't work, change your needle plate.
If you've been using a straight stitch needle plate (a plate with a small hole, often used for sewing fine, delicate fabrics), switch to a needle plate with awider hole.
Hope this will help you. Good Luck.
