To whom it may concern,
Activate the front-facing camera on your smartphone, and point the remote at the camera. Watch to see if the lights in the end of the remote illuminate purple, if they do, then continue reading this. If they don't, replace the batteries and try again. If the problem persists after the new batteries, you have an inop remote.
Next, if you do see them illuminate purple, and still it does not control your television.. ensure that there are no object standing between your remote and the front of the television.
If there are no objects obstructing your line of site, your issue is likely the IR sensor in the front of your television.

Check the remote control for its infrared emission. Check it with fresh batteries. If remote control is found OK, check and replace the infrared sensor inside the TV. it sounds like your back light might be going out. You might be able to fix this by installing a new backlight inverter board.
