My 5000W generator has a 10 hp engine that needs to be replaced, can I use an 8hp engine from a 4200W powermate
I would say, yes (given everything bolts up okay), but I wouldn't connect a full 5000-watt load to it.
If your generator has a .8 power factor (alternator efficiency), you will need an engine capable of producing 8.38 horsepower to turn the rotor of the alternator at full load (5kW). The formula is below. If the bolt pattern is the same--I would say it will be fine, however if you fully load the engine (5kW) you may have a dip in Hz (frequency) due to fuel starvation. That would be my next question since the replacement engine is in western wisconsin I can't compare it to my engine that is in eastern wisconsin. Does any one know if the bolts line up.Would appreciate any help.
