Oil leak In the course of a week a drip of oil appears under the joint just behind the chrome ring where the attachments are fixed and in front of the 2 bolts. Is this a major problem and any ideas for a cheap fix, the repair companies I have contacted refuse to come out to a non-commercial location and in any case want an arm and a leg for a repair? Many thanks for any help.

    Thanks for the help but I'm not sure if I was clear enough. I have circled the drip with blue. It seems to be coming from the seal behind the planetary action.

Hi,its no big deal--the mixer is filled with grease and its coming from the planetary.if it is bothersome remove the drip cup (silver ring) then you will see a roll pin that holds the planetary onto the main shaft.get a small punch and knock out the pin.if the planetary doesnt drop down use 2 flat head scewdrivers and pry it down.clean out the old grease and put in new grease.you can buy it from hobart or get a white lithium grease from an auto parts store.

    sorry,thats the transmission case sealed to the motor housing.two suggestions.go the cheap way and clean the seem up real good with alcohol and caulk around the seem with transperant caulk.a little leak like that i wouldnt worry about,theres plenty of grease in that trans case.second case--you can seperate the trans case from the motor and seal it yourself and since your in there clean out the trans and put in new grease.it is labor though,i can step you through it.

Hiya,

I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your mixer. To stop the oil leaking from the front of the mixer, you just need to remove the drip ring and give it a good clean underneath and this should stop the oil from leaking out. Kitchenaid leaking oil
Remove the chrome drip ring that covers the outer planetary, clean it out, wipe as much oil away as possible, put the drip ring back on and carry on using it. Eventually you will need to completely dismantle the gearbox and clean out & change the grease. It's not the sort of job to look forward to. The old grease slowly breaks down over time and the oil is separating out from the grease solids. It is special food grade grease so completely harmless.

Oil leaking. Called KitchenAid, they said this was normal, and to run the mixer with paddle on at a speed of 10 for 2-3 minutes. She also said that the oil was not toxic! I think the high speed running...
Kitchen Aid is 100% correct. The cause of the problem is age and lack of regular use, the oils in the gearbox grease separate from the solids over time and the oil then leaks out at the planetary and sometimes where the 2 case halves join under the silver trim band.
If you are up for a small job knock the chrome trim ring around the planetary off and clean it out and wipe around the area it covers. It is called a drip ring for good reason, you may find it full of oil.
The grease Kitchen Aid used in their mixers is Food Grade and it's harmless.
