New Sharp BD-HP16U won't play Blu Ray Discs

It plays regular DVD's, but when I put in a newly rented Blu Ray dis (The Day the Earth Stood Still and Casino Royale), the menu screen comes on the TV, but when I press PLAY on the remote or on the player itself, nothing happens. Can't get it to play. Sharp BDHP16U Blu-Ray Player does not play the blu ray movie "The Lake Cabin" It says the disk is loaded but does not get to a menu or start playing. If I press the play button it says can't operate. I did update the firmware and was then able to play Bride Wars however The Lake Cabin still does not play. Bride Wars did take about 3-4 minutes to load. Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks, Davce

You need to force the player to the the Top Menu of the disc.
The way to do this is: load disc, wait until it says "Reading Completed" (about 1 minute).

Wait for the PLAY icon ">" to show in the upper right corner (this may take up to 30-40 secs).

Once you see the ">" Hit the STOP button on the remote to get to the player's splash screen.

From the Sharp splash screen Hit the "Top Menu/Title List" button on the remote and wait for the circulating dots and then the disc menu appears.
Play the movie from the menu and you should be good to go.

Generally speaking, if the Blu-ray player is working properly and has no further wrong codecs or configurations, then it may be possible that your Blu-ray discs are not able to be read by the Blu-ray player.

You can check on this for possible causes and solutions:

BD-HP21U problems playing discs

You have inadvertently downloaded the US (or other region) version of the firmware. Unfortunately if you try and download the UK version the HP21 just tells you you have already installed it. I was told mine the only way to reset it is for it to be sent to Sharp or you can wait for a new firmware update.

Australia and new zealand DVD playes usually are region 4 only this means the DVD is probably imported. You will need a multizone DVD player to watch it.

Incompatible Disc in Sharp BD-HP21X Blu-Ray Disc Player

I had the exact same problem as you did... I bought the Sharp Aquos 42D85X which came with Sharp BD-HP21X Blu-ray Disc player. could not get brand new blu-ray movies to play and i found it froze everytime after 10 secs. I phoned sharp who basically were no help watsoever! I then went and returned my blu-ray movies back to the store thinking it was a problem with the discs.. The people there were extremely nice and since they had a display model of the BD-HP21X instore they offered to test the movie on it to veroify whether it was the blu-ray player was the problem or not. Turns out its a fault with all of the BD-HP21X models. So we then ended up returning it back to the store we bought it and exchanged it with the older model (BD-HP20X). I now have no problems playing blu-ray movies. Although another suggestion is to perhaps download the lastest firmware update & see if that resolves your issues.

I have a Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player that will not play Blu-Ray discs rented from BlockBusters in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. To Date, of all my 100 regular DVD, and approximately 25 owned Blu-Ray...

BD-P1000 Update Solution
The solution that worked for me: I went to www.samsung.com/ca and downloaded the Samsung BD-P1000 player's firmware update to my desktop. When opened, I was directed to"burn" a DVD on my computer. I then inserted the new DVD in my Blu-Ray player. The player automatically checked and confirmed player model number and registration and uploaded information from the DVD and the update was complete. The BD-P1000 then flawlessly played the rented Blu-Ray disc of "The Scorpion King".
Thank You Samsung!
