On the CD that came with your camera, was not only the instruction manual, but also the software to get the pictures and videos from your camera on the computer.
You first have to install the software, than connect the camera and then you can copy the content from your camera to the computer. The software also helps you when you want to do some editing on pictures and or video.
If you don't have the CD, you can get the content to the computer with an external memory card reader. But still when you have the video on your computer it won't be usable on every apparatus.
For some players, you first have to convert the video to the format the player accepts.
To convert the video, there are several freeware convertors, that work very well. On my windows machine I use Potplayer on the mac I use VLC. Not sure it that program can convert, but i'm sure I can play (almost) every video format.

Make sure you have the Mac driver for your camera. Install the Mac driver that came with the CD. Try to use a different USB cable. You can also try to isolate the problem by plugging your camera to a Windows OS computer like windows xp and vista.

The pros do it this way....they use a card reader to download to a folder they create on the desktop. From there, it's easy to send the pics to iPhoto.
