Question about Nikon D300 Body Only Digital Camera
I just opened the D300 box and started to use it. I have a D200 and assumed they worked about the same. The shutter is very slow and delayed, like I am using a slow shutter speed, no matter what setting I use (auto, manual with fast shutter speed, flash) there is a 1-2 second delay. They pictures are clear, but the delay often misses the shot. I wa strying to take pictures of my sons soccer game and it would release the shutter like I was taking a night shot keeping the shutter open for a long time- Is this a setting I have overlooked or a defect in the camera?
Just played around with this on my D300S because I'm getting significant delay between pressing the shutter and the shutter / flash actually firing. Answer? Turn off red eye. Red on = delay. Red eye off = instantaneous. FWIW I'm shooting raw @ 14 bit depth

Are you using mirror lock-up or live-view feature?

SOURCE: Why is there a delay?? Nikon D90
Sounds like you turned on Exposure delay mode (menu d10). This is similar to the "locking up the mirror" (or somethign) feature on canons.
YOu only need it when you doing a tripod shot with long exposure and you want to minimise absolutly all possibility of shake from the camera its self. Lifting the SLR mirror will cause small shake. Generally you can turn this off (i've felt it ona few times my accident and been confused for a second)
