how do you distinguish between light engine and ballast problems?

  • dlabass Jun 04, 2009

will the faulty light engine cause the bulbs to fail. the bulb i replaced was apparently bad because the supplier agreed to replace under warranty.

looks like light engine in five year old TV is not worth replacing. im seeing price around $800 and you can get a new mitsubishi for $1300

OK, this is a faulty Light engine that is producing these symptoms unfortunately. i will place the part number below so that you may prepare to order or request a repair. this defective Light Engine will need to be replaced asap if possible.

RCA Part Number: 263223(Light Engine DP)

A bad ballast will cause your set to click continuously for 5 clicks then, it will just shutdown. a bad light engine produces a very dark picture. sometimes, there will be sections of black spots as well and dark corners but, the most common will be dark or dimmed picture. it will go blank over time.

You ballast is fine if your set will power up. if you can visibly see the dark picture, your ballast if fine. Its the light engine that is your issue and, not the ballast.

It would be cheaper if it was the ballast but, this is not the case.

Tv turns on w/pic then pic dissapears light blinks 4 times

I have the same issue, we've had to change our bulb three times in less than two years. now we have 61" expensive paper weight. Our current bulb is less than 6 months old. The TV is only 2 years old and like i said this is our third bulb.

the blue light blinks 4 times. you get sound. then a few minutes the the picture returns... then it goes out, and the cycle goes on.

A solution to this would be greatly appreciated.

Dark Picture after being on a short time

You should clean the pins on the end of the picture tubes. Use a piece of sand paper or emory cloth as the pins are probably tarnished.

Screen will not light up

You most likely have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:
  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Problem with my 61 inch LIFI

I had the same problem, turned out to be the bulb, had it replaced and now I`m having problems with the new bulb (dark picture).By the way the first bulb lasted only 8 months and it has been 8 months since the new one was put in, so much for the 5 year bulb.

I have a GE side by side refrigerator model # PSS26SGRD and the water and ice dispenser stops working without any warning or symptom intermintently. It will be working find for days or weeks and suddenly...

Well, the solution to this problem was posted in this thread
http://www.fixya.com/support/t1295372-ge_profile_ref_ice_despenser_motor_not

It seems that the bulb in the front panel is pulling to much current as it ages and it makes the control panel in not work properly. Removing the bulb will fix the problem - just fixed mine.

Also seems to match your symptoms (works sometimes and then not others - bulb current is inconstent, light dims when dispense lever pressed - again wrong current draw).

Good luck
