First i had norton antivirus 2005 and had the same problem. Everything else will update except for the trusted application list. I have used their autofix tool and downloaded everything they tell me I have uninstalled with the removal tool and made sure all the norton and symantec and the shared folders were deleted. I reinstall about 20 times so far i have 2 discs and ive used both and still the same thing it runs and runs and runs then it says it has errors and live update was cancelled. i really am about to give up i have tried everything including making sure all the services are started then i tried to disable norton and antivirus still will not install everything else will and is up to date
Norton Antivirus 2005 has lots of errors and problems specially with its updates and also its virus scan is not reliable. Norton 2005 can also corrupt your windows while updating itself its better you uninstall it completely and go for Norton 2007 or my favourite Mcafee Total Protection 2007 which has no problems with updates and has anti spyware, registry repair and lots of things. You can also go for AVG Anti Virus which is quickest of all
Use solution #5, it did work for me. Just be patient. Unless you are infected by W32Fanbot virus (rare), whose traits you may consult at Symantec site and then checking if your register contains the keys this worm creates.
Try disconnecting and reconnecting to internet when the update goes into a hang state. It worked for me...!
Remove Norton 2005. The program is outdate for 2008, use an alternative anti-virus. Norton is plagued with update issues through its entire range. Norton 2007 stall on update. Mcaffee is best bet.

But i found that it does complete the update it just takes 25 minutes to do it !!!!!!!!!!
I finally got so aggravated with in that i uninstalled it and got kaspersky internet security 2007 . Its working great no more headache

Firstly, the Trusted Applications List is huge so takes a long time. There is a list held on the server of all applications considered by Symantec as safe. All the applications in your computer are compared against the list maintained by Symantec. If you already have a lot of clutter on your computer or some bad files, this can upset the process.
If you are having trouble with any of the Live Update functions, firstly do some housekeeping.
Clear out all your temporary internet files.
Do an adware and spyware scan using AdAware or some other trusted software.
It's also advisable to do a Registry clean. If you have never done this before, you will find hundreds of bits of files left behind from old programs and settings that are no longer required.
If you have had your computer for some time and have downloaded and deleted large files, music, video and so on, check to see if your drive needs to be defragmented.
When you have done all that, restart your computer and try Live Update again. Never interrupt Live Update even if it looks as though it has frozen. You may need to leave it for half an hour or so if your computer is slow and it may not appear to be doing very much..
If you still have problems it is probably better to uninstall Norton and reinstall it. If you have already done this and it hasn't worked, you probably haven't uninstalled everything.
I would always avoid using autofix tools because they usually just hide the real cause of the problem and use a work-around.
Make a note of your Activation Key before you uninstall anything. Be sure that you also uninstall Live Update. Sometimes uninstalling the main program does not do this. You will find Live Update in Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. When you have done this restart your computer. Use a registry cleaner after you have uninstalled it.You shoud now be able to reinstall Norton. Be sure to have your activation key because you may need this again. If you are using several Norton programs, unfortunately you may have to reinstall all of them.
Norton can be a little unpredictable during installation but there is no reason for not being able to install it fully and satisfactorily.

I've exactly the same problem with Norton Antivirus 2005. Everything except Trusted Application List installs correctly. Hope to get some help here.
I have the same problem with Norton 2006. I, too,have tried all of the Norton suggested "fixes" with no luck. I really would like a better solution than changing programs since I have paid for a year's worth of protection from Norton. And I have Norton installed on three computers (an HP desktop, a Compaq desktop and an HP laptop), and it's only my laptop that has problems with the Trusted Application list.

since 3.4.2008 I have the same problem with Norton Internet Security running under Windows 2000 on a 1,7 Gbyte Pentium 4 CPU with 2 Gbyte Memory.
The Symantec Trusted Application List Update is not updated. The process AleUpdat.exe is consuming all CPU available up to 100% and is running for 30 minutes. After that time the process is canceled by the internal timeout of Liveupdate.
All advice from Symantec deinstall ,reinstall full and partly with cleaning registry and delete directories gave no solution. Also the Symantec Autofix program which was not executed, Security Check wich also was not executed and Virus Scan changed nothing. Liveupdate and Norton is running perfectly beside the update of Symantec Trusted Application List Update.
My assumption is that the process need more than 30 minutes to process the file AleUpdt.xml which has 46.349 kbytes because the process continuously allocate memory up to around 120.000 kbyte when the process is canceled by the timeout.
I appreciate any help and solution.

Actually, when my subscription expires, I'm leaving. But I installed all other updates separately, then TAL by itself and it worked AOK.

I have the same problem- updates other functions ok- but stalls and times-out when getting to Trusted Application List. My "go-around" is to monitor for the ALEUpdat.exe to open- let it run for a minute- then cancel/close that program file. However, I do allow it to try to let the whole thing run to completion a couple of times a month- but it never does...
Legal stuff... I don't recommend anyone enter the Windows registry and delete keys or do anything that I suggest. I can only tell you what I did to correct the problem. May or not work for you....
I too could not get the Symantec Trusted Application List to install for Norton System Works 2005 Premier. Live Update would download it only to hang about half-way through the installation. After several uninstalls and Symantec "auto fix tools" failures, I deleted all registry keys related to "Symantec" and "Norton", deleted files regarding the same name only to find out that the Symantec Trusted application List would continue to hang during installation while running Live Update.
I decided to try Solution #5 by "Guest" He said..."But i found that it does complete the update it just takes 25 minutes to do it !!!!!!!!!!"...In my case, he is correct.
Once the update gets to the Symantec Trusted Application List install and "hangs", just leave the computer alone for about fourty minutes. ( I went out to rent a couple of movies.) When you come back, the update will be complete and installed.
Took me two days to get this ****** installed. Could find no help on the Symantec Support Site. Hope they burn in Hell.
I've the exact same problem. Symantec denies their software has aproblem but I know scores of other that have the same problem no Symantec solution works.And thier fall back is "Uninstall all Symantec Products using the Norton Removal Tool the reinstall everything". I've dumped all Symantec products.
