DVD player My Dell inspiron will play audio cd's and the computer automatically recognises there is a cd in the drive. With DVD's it's as though they don't exist and when i open Windows media centre, windows media player quicktime or any other DVD playing programme it just asks me to insert a disc. What's going on? please help, im a poor student and i need to watch scrubs!

The DVD drive would not know what type of disk it was spinning up and you would continually get a unknown disk message.

Yes your computer has a DVD writer... It should have the software to burn DVDs and CDs

Two things to check: First, look on the tray edge - does it say DVD and CD, or just CD? If it does not say DVD,it will not play them. The second thing is you may not have software to play a DVD. Usually Windows will use media player, assuming you have a dvd player. You can also open "my computer" and the drive will show up as a DVD or just CD.

just install cyberlink power dvd then it will stgart playing all kind of video cds and dvds from dvd rom

Cd and dvd drives are installed automatically on windows when they are connected properly. if your drive is not installing then your computers windows has problems, I would insist that you use recovery cd's to restore the computer to original state or use the windows installation cd to install windows to the computer again.

Note that the cd / dvd drive may work outside of windows, so you may be able to install windows with the drive even though it doesn't work in windows. check bios if the drive is detected there or not.

you may need to change the boot order so that the cd starts before the hard drive.

You have problem with your cd-drive's lens.

What is the exact problem with your D and E drive can u expand the issue please.

I also have an inspiron 1525 and I once had this issue (I'm running xp pro) but I found that you need to reinstall you audio driver, here is a link to the vista driver

Try this:- Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers. See if that sorts it.
