Start > Programs > Windows Update (or Microsoft Update). Do a scan and see if it finds any audio drivers in the Hardware section.

Tried everything to get sound back on hp pavillion 9000 could the battery getting too hot be causing this

Tried everything how Bonnie?

Anyhoo, if it was through Device Manager, I'm not surprised. Hardly ever works. (But seems to be recommended by every 'IT' man, lol!)

Did you download AND install the audio driver? (Audio = Sound)
A lot of people think they can just download, and that's it.
I need;

1) The Product Number
This is in the white Service Tag, on the bottom of the laptop.
P/N = Product Number

2) Operating System.
What version of Windows is it? XP, or Vista?

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3224049#N231

(Has Windows 7 been installed?)

Once I have this information we'll get crackin'.

Battery is getting hot? How about the rest of the laptop, or close to the battery?
Having any problems with the graphics on the monitor screen?

Not to make your heart sink, but the HP Pavilion dv2000 series, Pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series; has a problem with inadequate cooling for the graphics chipset.

Post back in a Comment.
