Cannot disassemble Troy-bilt trimmer head

I need to replace Troy-bilt trimmer head. However, I couldn't figure out how to remove the outer cup of the trimmer head. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There is a round, rotary black part between the metal piece to which the cutting head attaches and the outer plastic seat of the cutting head. There are two square slots, each about a quarter inch wide, on opposites sides of the black piece. Slide an Allen wrench or something similar firmly into the slot. Holding the Allen wrench in a stable position, turn the outer plastic ring of the cutting head (it has scalloped edges that can be gripped firmly) counter clockwise to unscrew the cutting head from the bolt on which it is mounted. Be careful with the tool (e.g. Allen wrench) used to hold the black piece steady, as it is plastic and could be damaged by the edge of the tool.

Holy cow this saved my neck. I could not for the life of me figure out where the "break" was between the head and the shaft. Thanks so much.

You are a lifesaver. I was on the verge of insanity until I read your solution. I could not figure out how that thing came off. Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!

Forget everything that was said above, let me tell you it can be replace. Cut away all the plastic Bump Head Assembly and you will see the nut on the shalt.. If you want to replaced with genuine parts check out this web sitehttp://www.mtdparts.com/

Pull the black plastic knob (bump head cover) off with the end of a hammer or a large screwdriver. That'll expose the bolt. Then hit the bolt head-on with a hammer. That worked for me. The bolt loosened and I could take it off with my hands. I think the bolt gets jammed sometimes.

Oh my gosh- I have been working on this for over an hour- I should have just hit it with a hammer in the first place! I was so frustrated as it is, that was my first instinct to hit the dang thing! Lol! Thank you, hit it with a hammer and unscrewed it with my hand and it fell off!

There should be a rounded cap at the bottom of the spool where the string is. Just unscrew it counter clockwise. It should come right off.

I have a TB525EC trimmer with the "new" string

Great question! You can always go to the Home Depot and purchase a "universal-type" retro head and if it doesn't fit correctly, just return it for a refund or go on a site like Ebay and buy a genuine Troy Bilt retro type string head. I bet they will fit.

The flexible drive shaft broke near the bottom. I have removed it from the motor end and pulled out whats left of the shaft, but cannot figure out how to get to the broken end so that the flex shaft can be...

I believe what you need to do is remove the 3 screws on the trimmer head to remove the head from the lower shaft. After the head is off you can look down into where the shaft goes and be able to use some needlenose pliers or something of the sort to pull the broken part out.<!-- from fixya rte -->

How to replace air filter on Troy-bilt TB20CS?

May be air filter but sounds more like your muffler is stopped up. First take the muffler off and see if it runs better without it. If so, burn the carbon out of the muffler and clean the muffler port on the engine. If not, then remove the four screw at the very end and disassemble. The ait filter is in that area. Line stuck inside head of troy-bilt trimmer

Take an awl or small diameter screw driver, same size or a bit smaller dia. than the line dia., and push it through the hole from the outside of the line head. This should push the piece of old line through the hole.
Recommendation: Leave at least one inch of line on the inside of the head, so you can grab it easily when you have to replace the line. I'll carry a pair of long nose pliers on me when I use my trimmer, so I can easily grab hold of the inside piece to pull it through.

Can not remove troy bilt weedeater head

Once all the bolts are removed, tap all the way around, (with a rubber mallet), where the head meets the bottom portion of the motor. It should come right off with a little coaxing.
