I just bought this detachable laptop and frequently use skype with video. Unfortunately there is this awful whirring sound on the receiving end that I can't hear but they can. I think it's the fan noise being picked up by the mic. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?
You never once said what microphone you are using.
dv1000 built it mike?
or a nicer boom mike head set,
or desktop mike , yes they sell those, that work great too.
3 types of mics to try if the fan is bad.
ever clean all that lint out of the fan?
answering for hardware reasons, not (MS skype software issues)
Microsoft are the problem, you need to have the same version of Skype on both machines.

try this on both computers:
first solution:
go to start
control pannel
sounds and audio devices
click on audio
make sure that a mic is selected.
second solution:
double click on the small spkr icon at the end of ur taskbar
make sure ur mic channel is enabled

Its due to your internal laptop MIC's failure! Plz check at any Compaq Service station! Becoz its internal hardware error! Becoz there r no seperate drivers for MIC! If your speakers are working great then MIC should work or else try to get repaired it!

Unfortunately, even though the laptop is only 4 mths. old, sounds like the bearings in the fan are going out. I would have it replaced. If the fan fails, your processor will overheat and that could be problematic.

well theres more than one fan on the inside of your computer, so its possible it could be dusty and its setting the fan off balance. its also possible you have a defective fan inside and this sounds like a hardware issue, its possible theres a service enhancement on this model so i would call tech support to see if it can be sent in for repair, i know its not what anyone wants to hear but i do not suggest opening it yourself as it can be hazardous (i.e you get electrocuted)
Note: this could also be cause by overheating or being dropped (theres numerous other things but those sound like the most likely alternatives)

You can try going into device manager and find the device and remove it then reboot and let it reinstall the mic drivers. If that does not work try going to the HP site and see if a new driver is available and install it. The mic could have gone bad and you may have to buy an external mic.
