Moving, CA to Florida and want ot load a chest freezer on its end
We are moving from CA to Florida and have a chest freezer that would fit best in the truck if it were on its end, the motor being on the top. What can I expect from moving it in this manner?
Re: Moving, CA to Florida and want ot load a chest...
You could expect internal compressor oil to flow into areas which would restrict refrigerant flow, resulting in no cooling. If you have to ship on end, make sure the compressor end is down !

The following is the GE moving instructions. If you have started before the 24 hour rest period and the unit had been rotated from vertical have the compressor inspected.
FREEZER MOVING INSTRUCTIONS
Please use the following steps when relocating an upright or chest freezer:
Disconnect the power cord from the wall receptacle.
Remove the food, defrost, and clean the freezer.
Use blankets to protect the freezer finish from scratches.
Place the freezer on its side for moving only if you have no other choice.
When transporting a freezer, keep it in an upright position. If transporting it in an upright position is not possible, lay it down on the compressor side of the unit. Be careful to secure the door to prevent it from opening.
If it has been transported on its side, set it right side up in its final location and allow the freezer to sit for the same amount of time that it was on its side (24 hrs max.). Do not plug the unit into the electrical receptacle without allowing this settling time. The unit can be damaged if it is plugged in prematurely.
If the unit was transported in an upright position there is no waiting time required.
If you have run it in a tilted position, the oil has migrated from the compressor to the evaporator. You need a technician to flush the oil back to the compressor. Only run equipment like this on a flat level surface. and always allow to stand a few hours after moving before switching on.
According to the manual for that model, this is normal. It says "bubbling or gurgling noises" which indicate that the refrigerant is moving about the lines to cool the unit.
You need to remember heat rises and cold air falls. The best way to load a freezer is to put meats on the bottom. They take alot longer to freeze and thaw and can save your stock if you have a power failure. Keep non-critical things like ice cream, ice, and other thing towards the top for quicker access.
youyr best bet would be to build a frame that the casters are welded to and there are no holes in the outer shell of the freezer. some L shaped angle would work nicely for this application and then there would be plenty of support for when the freezer is loaded up with product. Be sure that teo of the casters are lockable and two in the swivel freely.
