Printer lost static IP address with new router and won't install on network.

I set a static IP address for our HP Deskjet 6840. Due to internet problems, our provider installed a new router the next day. Now, I can't get the printer on the network. Printer report gives IP as 0.0.0.0. It says offline. I've tried putting static IP address into browser and get that it can't connect. Also have tried resetting printer to default settings. Called our internet provider & they say it's not their problem. Is there a way to fix this? I have a hardware address, firmware revision #, & link configuration #. Nothing else. Thanks!!

Re Can Get DeskJet 6840 To Work on Wireless Network Need HP Support...

Testimonial: "This still hasn't worked. Under "Wireless Networks", it says "hpsetup", signal strength 100, network type: ad-hoc, security embedded: no, type: none, connected: no. I no longer have the CD but have downloaded the new support & drivers. Still no luck. Any other ideas? Is there a way to get back into the IP static configuration without having the IP # for the printer? I'm still getting 0.0.0.0. Thanks!"

From what you tell me, the printer has returned to it's default settings. After installing the new software, did you try the solution provided from the video?

  • jeh11 Feb 13, 2014

I installed the new software but can't re-connect the printer to the router. When I get the IP address, it is still 0.0.0.0 so I can't even start doing what the video says. Is there another way to find out the printer IP address if it won't connect to the router? I have tried everything I can think of. Should I hardwire the printer to the router to obtain any info? Thank you for your assistance!! I have bookwork that I have to do to prepare for filing taxes & can't get it done.

Try hardwiring the printer to the router. That should give access to the network printer page and give the printer an IP address. It's your last resort since you have urgent job to do and the wireless connection fails.

This is a network issue, not a printer issue. Change the printer settings to DHCP, power the printer off then on again. The printer will download all the pertinent network settings and a new ip address. Turn off DHCP and assign just the last octet of the ip address. In addition, your new router may have a designated static ip range, x.x.x.100-x.x.x.150. This info you will need to obtain from your service provider.

Thanks but I got tired of dealing with it. Bought a Brother color laser and have had excellent results.

SOURCE: my network printer not taking

First, make sure you have plugged in a network cable CAT5 or CAT6 into the printer's network card (if you don't have one, then you can't use it as a network printer). Also, the network cable should go to a switch, hub or router.
Second, the IP address needs to be set on the printer, not through laptop. You should browse to the menus of the printer, until you find a menu Network, under this menu you should have TCP/IP sub-menu where you need to set the IP address, also there must be a Subnet Mask sub-menu and a Gateway sub-menu. This two options should be set up as well.

Hi, not sure why this is coming under the router section. You'd need to post a little more information about the problem. Is it with the IP address settings on your router or those wirthin the printer itself. If its

HPlaserjet 2600n without IP

INSTALLING A NETWORK PRINTER These instructions generally apply to all network printers with built-in network cards (print servers) such as HP LaserJet printers, IBM Infoprint laser printers etc. This example is for a network HP LaserJet printer. To install a HP printer (with built-in Jetdirect print server) as a network printer on a wireless network . You need to do the following -
1. Open the printer\'s menu and enable the Network Card - these print servers use a static IP address therefore, configure the IP address of the network card so it matches the IP range of your network. Eg. If your IP\'s are 192.168.0.xxx then set the network card to a high number say 100. (This is to prevent a conflict with the router issuing the same IP address to a computer on your network). Then set the Subnet Mask IP address to 255.255.255.0 If you have a wireless router then check the IP address range that the router issues to the computers on your network and configure the static IP address in the printer\'s network configuration accordingly.
2. Install the HP printer driver on your computer/s using the LPT printer port.
3. Connect the printer with a LAN cable to the network hub/router.
4. Click on Printers and Faxes - right click on the HP printer and click on Properties.
5. Click on Ports and click on Add Port.
6. In available ports - click on Standard TCP/IP Port and then Configure port.
7. Tick the IP box and type in the IP address of the HP\'s printer IP address.
8. Click OK and tick Enable bi-directional support and then OK
9. Remove the printer cable, then do a test print to see if the printer prints correctly.
Install the HP printer driver on every computer on your network and configure the printer\'s TCP/IP port as previously detailed. Do a test print page to check the printer.
You can now print from any computer on your network.

  • Install the printer on computer with appropriate driver and install as a network printer, not local.

I am trying to install the WRT160 N router, but can't install it due to having a Static IP. What should I do? The set up CD is giving the message that the the ethernet cord isn't plugged in. All I am doing...

Do not run the set up disc do it manually.
.You said that you have a static IP.
Is the static IP for the internet service provider or it is on the computer.
If you have set up the static IP on the computer then you will need to remove the static IP address from the computer and set it to obtain IP automatically.
If you have a static IP given by the ISP then you can use it to set up on the router.
Check the Ip address of the computer when connected to the router.
I believe the default gateway will be 192.168.1.1.
open the set up page of the router. default password of the router will be admin. Once you open the set up page of the rotuer, you will find the option Internet connection type. set it to STATIC IP address.
then you will get the option to enter the static IP address given by ISP.
Enter the information and Click save settings at the bottom and you will
be able to go online.

HP Officejet printer

i assume that your printer is connected to a network. if so, it could be that the printer is set to use dhcp for the ip address. and if that's the case, it's better to set the printer to use static ip address since there would come a time that the dhcp server (a router most of the time) would provide another ip addresses to all the devices connected to it. that could be the reason why you are getting a "no connection" message (disconnecting and reconnecting it at times would solve the problem temporarily).

here are the steps on how to set static ip on the printer using a windows computer.(Note: the installation cd can automatically assign a static IP address as long as the printer does not obtain a dynamic (dhcp) address)

- boot up your computer the normal way so it'll get an ip address from your dhcp server
- then turn off your dhcp server so that the printer will not get any ip address via dhcp
- reset the printer to set its factory default configuration (with no dhcp address)
* unplug the printer from the power
* plug the power cord back in while holding in the printer’s
report button (it will try to find a dhcp server; after about three
minutes of no dhcp response, the printer will default to a static ip address of 192.0.0.192

- then print a configuration page to confirm that the ip address of the printer is set to 192.0.0.192

- then press the report button (wait until IP address is 192.0.0.192 before proceeding. if it remains set to 0.0.0.0, check the network cable connection to the printer and to the network is secure. If some other address appears repeat steps 3 and 4 until the default address appears
- you can now start the software installation cd

*during the installtion, follow these steps:
- select the model of the printer that you are using which is hp officejet before clicking on "next"
- then select "do network settings for me, then press "next
*follow the instructions on the remaining install screens
- the software will pick an ip address in the private 169.254.x.x range (not available on the open Internet) and permanently assign it to the printer. it will also set up a static route to that address in the computer’s printer configuration
- turn the dhcp server back on by turning on the dhcp server by
connecting your cable/dsl modem or dhcp to the network. because the hp now has a permanent static ip address, it will
no longer try to use dhcp server to get an address
- install the software on the other computers on the network who will be using the printer. the installation software will discover the hp printer at the 169.254.x.x address, and will add the static IP address in each computer’s printer configuration

Note: if the installation cd will permit you to change th private ip address from 169.24.x.x, it's better to set it on the same range as of the ip address given by your dhcp server (for example your dhcp server provides ip addresses starting from 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.250, set the printer's ip address to 192.168.1.59-below or any ip address that will not compromise any ip addresses that were already being used by your other devices)

hope this'll help you but if you'll have other concerns just ask me.

ciao!
