Clothes have "dirty dishrag" smell after washing

I am so frustrated with this problem. It is most noticeable with towels. The clothes have a very nasty odor to them as soon as they become wet or damp.
I also have the problem of water being left in the washer. You can't see it but when you move the drum back and forth after removing the clothing you can hear it splish-splashing back and forth.

The water that remains behind in the Maytag Neptune for "balancing" is the problem. It is never completely replaced or sits stagnant for periods between washings. There was a class action lawsuit about this, but I missed the deadline. Anyway there is reportedly a way to drain that old water before starting a new load of wash by using a combination of the spin and rinse cycle. What would be logical to someone who understands how these things work?

If you open the door of your Neptune, you'll notice a small trough between the door gaskets (inner and outer) There is a drain at the bottom that can get blocked by lint and other funky stuff. Next time you do a load of towels, take a small dirty towel and wipe that area of your machine out real well. Secondly load a slightly smaller load in your machine. Be sure to use a HE compatible soap...less foaming- it does make a difference.. Also the swishy slushy sound is normal and there is liquid in the drum for balancing...it's normal.. I think with a clear door drain, a bit smaller load .you'll find it won't be smelly.. I've got one of these and the only time it gets ordoriforous is when I've jammed it to max capacity. Let me know if all this helps you out. k

Same problem here. I cleaned the seal around the tub and washed a few loads with HOT water and BLEACH! It did stop the washing machine itself from smelling. As for the clothes that already smell really bad.... drying them in the hot sunshine takes the smell out until washed with other still bad smelling clothes (like thick towels). As for my towels and washcloths, I finally just washed them all with BLEACH, no matter what color they were, and it worked great. I didn't care if they were lighter blue or green, just as long as they finally smelled clean!

Washed clothes still smell dirty

If you don't leave the door open after each use you will get a musty smell and mold will build up in the bellows. also you need to wipe the bellows dry and the door glass dry as to not get a build up of soap residue on it which will eventually make the door leak. Also, only use one or two tablespoons of soap, not what the soap manufacturer says on the package.

Smell after drying

Try drying your clothes without the dryer sheet and see if the smell is still there. If it is not, then the problem is the dryer sheet.
If it is, then you need to describe the smell better. Different people handle smells differently. What smells musty to you may smell fragrant to others.
You need to determine if the smell you don't like is really a musty smell, or is it a fragrance you don't like. Have some friends (not family members) smell the clothes and verify if what you are smelling is musty or fragrant.

It could also be that even though the clothes smell OK out of the washer, that the detergent you are using is the cause.

Moldy smelling clothes

First, clean your washer with one of the front load washer cleaners on the market. (Affresh, washer magic, smellywasher cleaner, whirlaway hot tub cleaner, or Tide front load washer cleaner) Use the longest, hottest cycle your washer has, with no clothes.
Second, rewash the smelly clothes with the heavy wash cycle and a second rinse option, using no soap or fabric softener. This will remove the soap and/or fabric softener build up in the clothes which is causing the smell. Third, begin using one to no more than two tablespoons of HE soap per load, and not more than 1 teaspoon full of fabric softener if you use it. This is because top load washers used up to 45 gallons of water per load, and your front load machine is only using about 12 gallons total. If you are washing a load of bath towels (which were only used to dry off your clean body, not wipe up the floor or something like that) they are not really dirty,...... for washing "clean" towels, don't use any soap, and of course never use fabric softener on towels.

Clothes and towels don't smell fresh after washing

If you are sure that the pump is not blocked then try running the machine on a quick wash on its own with a little bleach in the drawer.

Order in clothes

Put a half a cup of vinegar into wash load, with soap. It removes the smells.
