I have been shaving with electric razors for 48 years, and the Braun 8595 is by far the best one yet.
I have had the problem of the refusal of the cleaning station to recognize the level of fluid in the cartridge, three times over the last couple of years. It seems to relate to a build up of shavings in the unit. To get it working again I inverted the unit, and carefully flushed water via a small tube, back through the 1cm diameter hole in the underside of the open base. Of course, the unit must then be thoroughly dried before use, or the sparks may fly. Does anyone know how to dismantle the unit for a safer and more thorough clean?
#1-Remove cartridge, unplug unit from charger & from base. #2-Hold base upside down. With a SMALL straight blade screw driver carefully pry the two 1/4in spring wedges away from outer case. Some resistance will argue with you in separating the outside shell. Proceed with caution in cleaning pump & ckt bd. When reassembling confirm 1/4in lock pads are ALL the way. Good Luck.

Does the charge light on the razor come on when the shaver is in the base?
The base communicates with the shaver through the charger contacts, so if you
don't have good contact the shaver won't charge and the base won't know that a
shaver is present.
Check that the metal contacts on the base are clean and "springy", and not loose or displaced.
If the shaver charges fine in the base but you can't start a cleaning cycle, I'd
suspect the electronics in either the base or the shaver. Even if the mechanical
switch in the base were faulty, the cleaning-status LED's in the base should come on when it connects with a shaver.
Do this at your own risk. If you're too stupid to follow directions, then don't do it.
Ok, real simple: the surface of the metal contacts on the base that touch the contacts on the shaver have oxidized partially. A quick fix, if you find that Braun's technical support is as worthless as the pathetic alloy used to make these oxidized contacts, take a small piece of aluminum foil and cover each of the contacts on the base, separately. Tape it down, or something, but make sure the foil touches the metal contact surface. Make sure that the aluminum can touch the contacts on your shaver. AND make sure that these aluminum pieces are not large enough to touch one another, because then you REALLY risk ruining the base and the shaver, and you are the only one to blame. All you really did was give the shaver "new" contact points on the base to connect to. Works for me, and I don't see these foil pieces when the shaver's plugged into the base, so I don't care. A (nearly) free, quick fix.

I have a similar problem, only mine started when I replaced the Shaver cutter/head. I replaced it with the Braun part specified for the 8000 series I picked up at WalMart. Now the base will not run any cleaning cycle, reservoir level light comes on(full), but the cleaning cycle light does not come on at all.
I have the same problem, i replaced the cutting block and foil with the correct braun parts, now it wont ever select a cleaning method. It does charge while in the cleaning dock, so i know the contacts are ok.
My cleaning base tell level of solution but no longer indicates cleaning level or starts cleaning process when lock bar ispressed. My unit is only about 2 months old.
The cleaning base of my husband's Braun shaver does (or doesn't do) the same thing-- it recognizes the level of cleaning solution, but doesn't appear to detect the shaver (although the shaver appears to be charging, suggesting that the contacts are still intact). The shaver cradle is flooded with cleaning solution, but the cleaning cycle will not start. I did notice that just prior to this problem occurring the shaver seemed to have self-initiated a cleaning cycle (no one had touched the shaver-base unit for at least a few days), but was 'stuck' in the cleaning cycle. The base sounded like it was 'trying' to clean the shaver, but just didn't have the strength (didn't sound like normal). The noise stopped when I touched the unit, and then I discovered that the base no longer detected the cleaning level needed. Anyone have any solutions?

My base does not charge or clean, though it does detect the level of cleaning fluid. The contact points are clean, springy, etc and I can visibily see are contacted with the shavers when it is inserted?!
The base recognizes a new cleaning cartridge but will not indicate a cleaning level or reset to clean. The charging operation is ok. Everything has been cleaned thoroughly, but still no cleaning cycle.
