SOURCE: heard a loud "pop" and

The loud pop and the picture going out is usually due to either failed buffer boards or sustain boards. The first thing to do would be to examine the sustain boards for any visually identifiable damage.Have a look at the boards titled X-main and Y-main and see if you can notice any charring or anything of that sort, especially near the fuses. If nothing then let me know and I will give you instructions for testing the pico fuses.

I have a RCA 42"

The YSUS control board has failed from the description given. This is typical of the symptoms presented. It can be removed fairly easily and sent to a repair center to be repaired.

The picture went out, no sound nothing... There was a pop then the picture went out. its only three years old...

the popping sound is a capacitor inside burnning out. its just a case of looking for the one that has burst or bulged on top and soldering in a new one.

42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Most likely what happened is one of the capacitors went bad. When a capacitors goes bad it produces a popping sound. This could be an easy and cheap fix if you find the bad capacitor or capacitors. The bad capacitor will have a bulging top most likely on the power board but could be anywhere.
