When I start my system up the screen will display briefly then go blank. If I turn the power off then on again on the monitor, it will display briefly then go blank again. If I turn it off and on many times, sometimes for half an hour, it will display and work fine until I turn the system off again.

The VA720 I have has 4 screws from the back: 1 at each bottom corner and 2 in the middle lower at the base. Remove screws and carefully pry the front and back halves apart. They snap together. Usually working the bottom apart first is easiest.
SOURCE: problem in monitor
I had the same problem. I found recommendations here and on other sites that I needed a new backlight inverter / power supply. I found exactly what I needed at this site: http://www.lcdrepair.us/ part number: E173FPCPWR. The have pictures of the exact card you need you need to by. Mine cost $50 plus shipping ($14.69) (ugh!) I just installed it today and it's working great. You need to feel comfortable popping the back of your monitor and working with little screws and connectors. You may find the part cheaper online. Sure beats buying a new monitor.

I had a Gateway 19" TFT that did the same thing.
Does the power light stay on? If so, you more than likely have "dry" solder joints at the inverters. Take it apart & shoot a little solder on the inverter solder joints. Good as new now. The solder joints dry out because of the high heat generated. This is a very common problem.

Dear friend,
I just fixed my Viewsonic VA902b, here is how.
1/. Remove the LCD housing
2/. Remove e Main Power supply (label the 4 connectors for the 4 lamps before you unplug them)
3/. Locate the 1000uf-25v Cap (i think c806) check the top of the cap, if the top is buble up then replace it. I replaced my with 1000uf-35V 105 C, use the cap with long leads, solder it to the PCB and lay the cap down away from the heat sink (there should be plenty of room)
4/ check all solder joins, if it look like cold joins simply re-solder it
5/ when you are done, you can apply power to the board and check for the voltage at the cap, it should read about 14.7VDC
6/. Re-install every thing and it should be good to use again
Please pardon my english. Good luck to all

there is atleast a 5 year difference between your computers. Technology has made a huge jump from back then, especially in graphics cards!!! that LCD was probably made after your computer, alot after your computer as a matter of fact. So it is your graphics card. get a new computer, its time to update
