The keyboard of my hp dv1000 does not work. some keys will produce but not what they are supposed to. for instance, the P key will produce "opopopop" and another key will produce":;:;:;:;:;". none of the keys work at other than something like that. my hp does not overheat and all else works fine.
It sounds like your keyboard may have bit the dust !
If you can get to a DOS Prompt or word pad to check, I will explain.
Start with going across all the top key's. If you find one that does not work, go directly below it and see if that key left to right works. If not your connection is corrupt and the keyboard should be replaced. Example: Type Y and U if the U does not work go below to the J and K, if they don't work, 1 or more of the integrated connections are bad and you will more that likely see at-least 8-10 more key's in that region that also don't work.
Keyboard for the DV1000 units can be purchased for $16.00 to $30.00 US. on (ebay)
Replacing the key board is not a bad job, but will require a little time.
Good luck.

P.S. DV1000 units are fairly old and you got your money's worth out of that one. !
