Went to canon website and found they had a problem with the ccd which causes these problems and will fix it for free. Apparently there are lots of models with this faulty component.

First thing to try is that you didn't accidentally turn off the LCD screen. Turn on the camera, and press the bottom DISP on the back of your camera.

If that didn't work, the next thing to try is to take a picture while the viewfinder is black. Download the picture to your computer, and view it on the computer's monitor. Does this picture also show up as black. If so, then the camera's CCD imager has likely failed, requiring professional camera service to be repaired.
