Black screen on Canon S1 IS camera

The LED and viewfinder on my Canon S1 IS are both black. The screens are black whether I want to play back a picture or take a new one. The lens cap is off. All the menus work and show up on the screen.

Canon S2 powershot. Camera turns on but no pictures show up and cannot see through the viewfinder...it is black. Menus all work. What can we try?

First thing to try is that you didn't accidentally turn off the LCD screen. Turn on the camera, and press the bottom DISP on the back of your camera.

If that didn't work, the next thing to try is to take a picture while the viewfinder is black. Download the picture to your computer, and view it on the computer's monitor. Does this picture also show up as black. If so, then the camera's CCD imager has likely failed, requiring professional camera service to be repaired. If your camera was an S1 IS, Canon would fix this for free:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819

Unfortunately the S2 IS is not on the advisory list. If you wish to inquire of professional repair from Canon, please call 1-800-OK-CANON.
