My laptop suddenly stopped detecting my headphones. But before that happened, I downloaded an mp3 file and listened to it for a few hours. Then I left my laptop in sleep mode. The next day, when I plugged in my headphones, my laptop won't detect it anymore. :( I've tried every solution i came across in forums but the problem's still unsolved. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the sound drivers, scanned my laptop (in case the problem's caused by a virus), checked my registry for errors and disabled and enabled the audio jack. I've also tried putting my laptop in sleep mode and then wake it up but nothing's changed. my laptop still won't detect my headphones. I'm sure that the problem is with my laptop because my headphones work fine with my other devices. I'm starting to think that it might be a hardware issue. :'( i've been using this laptop for 3 years now and it's my first time encountering this kind of problem. please help. and thank you so much in advance. P.S. my laptop's running on windows 7
If you cannot get the sound back after the Factory reset then its likely a hardware issue. Sound card problems are rare unless you've spilled liquied on it, more likely its the headphone jack that is the culprit.
Contact warranty if there is any.
If you think you can, try resoldering the jack connections. It won't be easy though and you can easily damage the motherboard. Lead free solder is difficult to melt!
If you don't want to fix it you have the option of a Bluetooth wireless headset.
Is the speakers working? Did you try to uninstall the sound card from the device manger, then restart it. Some time this helps
the speakers are working. yes, i've already done that but that didn't work...
i've already tried every possible soi'm guessing there's a loose connection in my sound card.
i've tried all possible solutions to my problem and i have a feeling that it's really a hardware failure. i already checked the sound card it seems to be working fine. do you think it might just be a loose connection???sorry for the redundant reply.

SOURCE: Can't wake up....gone into sleep mode...how do you wake it up
press and hold the power button down for about 5 secs. The computer will shut down. Restart it and right click on the desktop, go to properties then look for screensaver tab , then choose power options, click on hibernation tab at the top and uncheck enable hibernation. Or choose stanby options and choose a longer time before the computer goes to sleep.

Your laptop model? Sound hardware? Driver version? Is it Realtec HD audio Driver. Tried wiggling the headphone port (green circled one)?
Do the headphones work?
Laptop model: toshiba satellite L740
sound hardware: AMD high definition audio device
Driver version is 7.12,0.7706. yes, i've tried wiggling the headphone port but still it's not working. my headphones are working as well.
OK now this is something to
try that is to reinstall tha operationing system, back up all your personal data first, I thank it will help. It is cheaper than repalcing the mother board
why do i have to replace the motherboard? is the sound card attached to the motherboard? ok i'll give that a try...although i doubt it will make any difference. haha...
i thought the sound card was detached from the motherboard. i was thinking it might be loose connection and that it could be fixed by soldering the loose part. haha...guess my problem's way more than that. if the sound card is attached to the motherboard then i can't do anything about it anymore. :(
To restore the original factory software image on your computer follow these steps: Make sure the computer is turned off ("Shut-down" from the Windows Start menu) Remove any peripherals such an external mouse, keyboard, monitor, USB flash drive etc. Make sure the AC Adapter is plugged in and working. Press and hold down the 0 (zero) key on the keyboard while powering on the computer. Release it when the recovery warning screen appears. If the recovery process offers a choice of Operating Systems, select the appropriate one for you. A warning screen appears, stating that when the recovery is executed all data will be deleted and rewritten. Click Yes to continue. When the Toshiba Recovery Wizard opens select "Recovery of Factory Software" or the appropriate option for your needs. Continue to follow the directions restarting as necessary.
