Here is a good tutorial on how to adjust the screen resolution on a mac: How to change Mac screen resolution Macworld . However, it may be that the output from your computer doesn't match the size of the screen you have. Did you check to see that the computer can output an image that matches the size of your screen. That is a common problem.

27" monitor display not magnifying to fill edges

To help you we'd need to know what Computer Operating system you're using, and what computer brand you're using. VGA is a bad choice, you need the others; the reason they're grayed out is probably due to a missing driver for your graphics interface, and so you'd need that first. Then once you have other options, it would be an easy fix. So, the real problem appears to be: How do I install a graphics driver for my computer, and we'd need information to help you with that! :-)

I run on Windows XP, pack3 and I use a CRT ViewSonic EF70 ... 17 inches The screen is not filled completely with the image from Microsoft Internet Explorer, nor with Outlook Express .... there is about 3...

two things you can do, first right click on your windows screen and look for "settings" this will open a dialog box where you can set the screen resolution. Set it lower and see if your screen is now filled. if that doesn't work go into the monitor setup (buttons on the bottom or side of the monitor) and try to set the verticle and horizontal size, since its only 3/4 of an inch you should be able to stretch the screen to fill up the space.

AOC monitor 2436vh does not fill the screen using the HDMI connector. There is a 1 inch black border around the window. Controls to stretch the display are locked out (not accessible) when using that...

The "Best Solution" fixes a problem that is unrelated to the original poster. anononline19's solution is to fix the entire OSD being locked (displays OSD Locked when the menu button is pressed).

Original poster's problem can be fixed by changing your graphics card's "overscan" settings.

Overscan on ATI cards:

Overscan on nVidia cards is currently not supported.

I can't get my desktop to cover the whole screen. I have windows 7. How can I get it to cover my whole screen?

If you mean the wallpaper, you will need to go into the desktop properties and set it to stretch the image. If you mean the desktop itself...you will need to change the screen resolution.

Standard monitors use dimentions like 1024x768, but a wide screen uses one like 1280x768. If you use a resolution that doesn't match the aspect ratio of the monitor it will fill in the extra space with black space and no desktop.

3 inches of black on both sides of my monitor

I have seen this when using HDMI cables from the computer side.. The TV has a resolution that is not always full screen with TV shows. There is a setting that allows you to "zoom". My TV has 4 settings: normal, stretch and crop, stretch left and right, stretch and pinch (shrug).

My screen is stretched with a 1 and ahalf inch black space on the top and bottom

Most LCD monitors have a couple of control buttons at the top or on the side. Inside the menu, there should be an option called "Auto Adjust" which senses the input signal and resolution, and then shifts the monitor to match it. Have you tried to auto-adjust the screen? There may even be a button called "Auto" on the monitor.

There are 2 inches of black space on both sides of my screen.

There should be a way to go into the screen settings on the set (either from the remote or on the bottom of the screen). From that menu you can adjust the size of the screen, stretch it, align it, etc.
