Brand new SD card - says card is full? Nikon D40

Hi everyone, I had an old memory card and it kept saying card is full after taking 100 pics (2gb), so I ended up buying a NEW SD card 64gb but it STILL says that the card is full. I've formatted it on the camera itself but I can't take any pictures. Is it the card or the camera do you think??

I ran into this exact issue (64GB Sandisk SD not working with an old Nikon D40). The problem is that the camera requires FAT32 formatting, which is not supported on partitions greater than 32GB (i.e the 64GB stick). A format from the camera attempts to repartition all device space (64GB) which is incompatible.

I solved this by connecting the SD to my laptop, opening the windows disk management utility (diskmgmt.MSC), deleting all partitions on the SD (right-click, delete partition on all allocated space), the right clicking the unallocated space, add simple partition, then allocating only 32GB and using FAT32 as the format (any more and windows will only provide exFAT as an option, also not compatible with Nikon D40). Plugging that into the camera and NOT reformatting from there worked.

Are you sure it is full, did you put it into a computer to check? Maybe the picture resolution is very high or you have videos and there is more than 2Gb worth of photos.

SOURCE: memory card malfunction

Pictures can sometimes be recovered by sending the card to a service provider, or by downloading software designed to recover the pictures from the card. It is not clear weather the problem is the card or the camera, however to recover the pictures from the card would be the same process. If you do not have one you will need to buy a USB card reader to load the card on the computer. Consider buying another card to test in the camera, if you so wish. If the camera is new enough also consider contacting the manufacturer for warranty assistance. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

SOURCE: Nikon D40 Memory Card Error

Hello. Make sure the write-protect switch on the SD card is in the UP (nearer to the contacts) position. Try the card in an SDHC capable reader on your computer first. Note that the SD card can only be inserted one way - make sure you're not putting it in upside-down! If the computer recognizes the presence of inserted card (whether it can read it or not), format it at FAT32. When finished, remove properly (icon in system tray) and insert into your D40 slot, WITH THE CAMERA OFF!! Turn on the D40, and if it now recognizes the SD card, FORMAT it again, in the camera. Good luck.

My nikon D40 will take take take pics then all of a sudden it wont take and I have to stop turn it off then turn it back on and it will take.... It's like I am taking too many pictures is that possible? I...

The guy at wolfe is sort of correct, but missed just enough of the truth to convince you to buy a high performance memory card.

There are several speeds of SD and CF cards as well as for the devices (your camera) that read & write those cards. If your camera was built for the original (slowest) speed, then it doesn't matter how fast the card is, the camera can only provide the data to the card at the slow rate. The D40 came out c.a. 2006 and supports SDHC. If your old card was simply SD, then upgrading to SDHC should help.

HOWEVER, the camera is still capable of taking pictures faster than it can write to the card. It buffers the image data in RAM, but when that buffer is full, it stops taking pictures.

You shouldn't need to turn the camera off & on...just wait a few seconds and you should be able to shoot again. You don't have to buy a new camera, just be aware of its limitations.

If shooting in jpeg and using an sdhc card, the camera specifications indicate the number of shots before filling the buffer is unlimited. BUT if shooting in RAW mode, the number is 9. Try shooting in jpeg unless you really need the abilty to tweak the RAW images. Chances are, if you're shooting fast, jpeg images should work for you.

I have two sd cards that are brand new on is a pq1 4GB sd hc and the other is a pny optima 2GB sd when I put them inmy camera it says filesys e00100 what is it?

I own a Nikon D5000, that has a 'pqi 4GB SD HC' memory card inside.Within this camera is also something called movie mode, in other words I can record short movies. Now here is the problem, Nikon says how much I can record on the memory card, depends on the speed the memory card records. According th them, I can only record 5 minutes on a 2GB memory card. Does that sound right to you. P-l-e-a-s-e I need help in understanding this.
If this is true,......what side memory card (HD if possible) would I need to record 30 minutes in the movie mode. Thank you so much for your help.

Cant take a pic says card is full

If this is a brand new memory card, the two things to do/check are:
- Make sure the camera supports 2GB of memory (manual should say that)
- Format the memory card - the manual should give detailed instructions of how to navigate through the menu and perform a format on the memory card

2GB SD card is brand new but camera says it is full.

Some of the older cameras will not take the bigger cards. You can use the bigger card with your computer to store your photos.

My memory card won't work in my camerakeeps telling me to format the Lexar 2GB card every time I insert it

Use the camera to format the SD card not your computer. There should be a menu option to format it.

How do I get camera to recognize SD card???

Are you sure it's an SD card, 2GB or smaller? The A7 won't work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

Ativa memory card

The card is probably formatted with a FAT16 filesystem. Try reformatting the card with a FAT32 filesystem.
