I cannot figure out how to open and respool the string on my mod 2816 mc culloch weed wacker and i do not have a manual.

remove the spool and wind the spring hold it with a screw driver thread string and make a knot on the end release the spring and reattach the spool if you need visual instructions try Sears parts.com they will help.

i also have a ryobi weed wacker. if it is the same. you don"t have to remove the button. line up the 2 arrows one on wheel with bumpy edges and one by the button. you should see 2 holes feed a 2-3 foot piece of line into the hole the line comes out of for cutting and it should come out of a curved holw on the bottom by the button .tuck the end into a small round hole . pull line tight (tug on the section that you cut with). wind the string by turn the ring around the button. til desired length. if this doesn't work. google you model # and look for a manual (manual for ryobi weed wacker model # ------------.)

The nylon string is simply spun onto the emty spool. There should be an arrow on the top of the spool indicating the direction to wind the line. If the spool is missing a notch to hold the line to get started, use your finger to hold it in place for a few full wraps.

you need to unscrew part#37 .. it may be on very tight... hope this helps

You need to give close attenttion to the string wrap" arrows" or guides and see if there are holes the size of the string your using is correct size to fit into these "grip holes inside the casing.

This isn't a solution to the problem. However, I think you should talk to someone at Home Depot or Lowes or wherever you bought the model, and see if the string is in there correctly; if it is, then u'r weed wacker must have some other mechanical problem. Sometimes it is just best to buy a new one. The more expensive models are the best.
