After a period of time on the phone, sound breaks up

This could be a fail with the speaker in the phone (water damage is a favourite), electronic faults (The Analogue to digital converter is failing), or simply a lack of signal strength in your area causing the signal to fail. Remember mobile phones are actually a radio transceiver and that all the problems that affect them also affects mobile phones (Crackly signal loss of signal bad audio etc etc).

Why does my receiver start stop producing audio output half an hour after turning it on?

Most likely is an intermittent solder connection opening up as set warms up.

Receiver switches modes after a period of time

The actual switching is done by an electronic microprocessor. This electronic processor is most likely faulty by now, and needs to be replaced. Repair costs for this are expensive enough that buying a new receiver might be the best logical action, as a new comparable unit might cost only slightly more than the needed repair costs for the SA HE 200. Good luck.
