Use to play dvds, now only plays cds. Makes noise when trying to 'read' dvd. could this be a software problem or do I need new dvd player?
The DVD unit is defective. Sometimes a firmware update or download can clear up corrupted software in the player - but most times the unit has simply gone south - they are replacable, not repairable.
Try installing a new software program to play your DVDs. Also look for updated dvd player drivers from Acer site.
any idea on what the drivers would be called? couldnt find anything on the acer website for this. Having the same issue on windows 7, 64 bit. After the comapny "fixed" my laptop, the dvd thing only works on some cds, no dvds.

go and try to open in safe mode .
restart >press F8.
see whether it work's..if not go to the bios setup and see the configuration and sellect . restart > delete . (for bios setup..).

dvd driver stop working c drive was over laoded and the computer whent in to disk clean and deletelte the driver for the dvd rom i can no longer play cd dvd or use the crw or dvd RW ASPIRE 1360 2.8GHZ

If it recognises cd but not dvd it means the drive is faulty. There is 2 lasers one for cd and one for dvd. The dvd laser is faulty. It also means that it is not dirty lens because it reads cd's.
The CD/DVD drive may need reseating to make proper electrical connection. Remove this drive and insert it back into the laptop.
Next try cleanibg the drive.
The laser lens maybe dirty, use a CD/DVD lens cleaning kit to clean the lens int the drive.
If this does not fix your problem then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.
