Try this, put a DVD movie in the drive, then open windows explorer (Right click the start button, click explore) then see if you can read the DVD files on the DVD.

If you cannot browse the DVD then the DVD optics of the drive have failed and you will need to replace the drive.

SOURCE: how to make bootable pen drive

A FEW THINGS BEFORE YOU DO THIS....

1. Your Laptop has to support booting from a PEN DRIVE. Some BIOS's may refer to your pen drive as a USB floppy or USB zip.
2. The USB flash(pen) drive must support booting from it in general.
3. The flash drive must contain the boot/system files.
4. Below is a utility from HP that you can use to make your pen drive bootable.

How to install windows 7 32 bit in my gigabyte 8vm533m rz motherboard

You need the installation DVD, or download the ISO and copy to a bootable USB pen drive.
Boot from the DVD or pen drive and follow the on screen instructions.
You will need the licence key to activate the software.

Boot mgr missing message

I could have told you you were loading Windows 7 by the symptoms. Try running a Malware program with a register edit-register function in it. If you are switching from XP Pro. you will need to clear your register and all command and drive to . Set BIOS to boot from DVD/CD first then set the hard drive to boot second. Windows. Also if you have access to another computer ask microsoft for tech support.

I am trying to re-install windows xp on a DELL dimension 8300 but it does'nt boot it can go to the BIOS and everything but it say Boot.mgr is missing

You should use the bootable Windows XP CD to start the installation.
To do that, you must first enter the BIOS in the Boot Options select the DVD drive as first (so that it will boot from CD/DVD first, instead of the hard disk). Save and Exit, insert the bootable Windows XP CD in the drive and when prompted to do so, "press any key to boot from CD-Rom".
Hope the above helps.

I hav a dell laptop (latitude D810)..when i switch it on it displays NTLDR is missing..also my CD drive is not working..please suggest me if i can do something using USB port,,,,

Yes you can make a bootable pen drive using some other pc which is having both usb and cd writer working. Simply copy the complete files of your os file to that pen drive or external hdd and change the bios settings such that the first boot option shall be usb device and search other bootable device should be enabled.
