Need a bootable pen drive

Try this, put a DVD movie in the drive, then open windows explorer (Right click the start button, click explore) then see if you can read the DVD files on the DVD.
If you cannot browse the DVD then the DVD optics of the drive have failed and you will need to replace the drive.

A FEW THINGS BEFORE YOU DO THIS....
1. Your Laptop has to support booting from a PEN DRIVE. Some BIOS's may refer to your pen drive as a USB floppy or USB zip.
2. The USB flash(pen) drive must support booting from it in general.
3. The flash drive must contain the boot/system files.
4. Below is a utility from HP that you can use to make your pen drive bootable.

you have to send it back to hp to get it fixed, this is the second time mine had the same problem
