Ink absorba-the-Greek is full and as I don't have a car getting this machine to a repair shop is difficult so I would really like to clean and reset the counter myself. Can anyone point me towards instructions written for someone with the manual dexterity of a Three-Toed Sloth and the technical competency of a seagull?

You will have to remove the scanner top to get to the absorber box, a little more complicated that I care to explain in this forum. You could just reset the absorber box count and move on...the ones I have cleaned were not that bad when this problem and error 46 occurred. Go in to maintenance mode by pressing Menu, *,2,8,6,4 withing two seconds. If the lights are not blinking, press the stop key and retry procedure. The display will not say maintenance if you have error code 46. Once in maintenance mode press 8,0 to enter equipment data log. Press the black start key until the machine displays "Purge". Press 2,7,8,3 in this order to reset purge counter to 0. Press black start key until the display says "Flushing". Press 2,7,8,3 in this order to reset flushing counter to 0. Press stop key to exit the Equipment Data Log. Press 9,9 to exit maintenance mode

Hi There
A good old clean out some times works do this 2 or 3 times.
Summary
Usage of compatible ink and leave the printer idle too long may cause printhead clogging
What should you do if you get this problem. Relax; you may recover the printhead by unclogging it. Follow these steps to unclog the printhead
1. Right click in the printer driver name
2. Select Properties menu
3. Click Maintenance tab
4. Click on cleaning sign for regular cleaning. Perform this up to 3 times.
5. If this does not work, perform Deep Cleaning
And if that not work
Some times it needs a good clean up but this is up to you if you want to do this,
But after you done this prime the printer so it gets the inks back in the heads, it may take a little time for the inks to work.
Ok.
There is fluid cleaner for this but I can never find any in the shops the only ones I seen is when they sell them in Tesco but they come in with the ink refill bottles so I just use worm water by it self on a cloth and dabbing on the heads to clean them, it will not harm the heads but not to much water.
Some heads are on the inks them self but some have them inside the printer so I not know your printer so if the heads are inside you need to get them out you may find that some heads will just clip out put some need to be unscrewed so you got to know how they come out so be careful and not push to hard on them, if the heads are on the ink then it is a easy job to clean them,
It worth a try it worked for me more than ones.
Please all I ask is call back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one, so I will keep on helping.

you need to dismantle the printer by opening the scanner lid, pinging the blue arm out of the white retainer with a screw driver, flip the scanner lid right over onto the desk on the LH side of the printer - it will come off its hinges for this. lay it lid down on the LH side of the printer - be careful not to snap the power and data cable connecting with the base. Next you have to remove the 4 retainer screws in order to remove the plastic cover over the rest of the base. The pad and ink box are at the rear on the right hand side.
SOURCE: Brother MFC-465CN printer. Need a fix for error 46.
The problem is due to the fact that Brother machines excessively self-clean. Each time they self-clean a small amount of ink is dumped in to a holding tank/sponge. When a predefined number of self-clean operations have been performed, the machine refuses to print and gives the error message you have stated. Brother state that the tank/sponge must be replaced before the counter is reset, again by a Brother agent.
However, there is a way of reseting the self-clean counter yourself - if you Google your model number and the error code somewhere in the results you'll find how to do it. The only risk of doing this without changing the tank/sponge is that it will eventually overflow and leak out the bottom, but I did my Brother all in one some time ago and have had no problems yet.
SOURCE: error 46,the ink absorber pad is full.
first, try to establish if this really is full absorbent pad, remove power cable from the back, wait 20sec, press menu/set key, insert power mains - in most brother printer/faxes this will display machine error code. if this is code 46, you are on the money, your absorbent pad is full (not necessarily, only counter is showing it as such in most cases).
we will asssume that counter is showing full and therefore reset it again to zero:
1. after machine code is displayed, key in "80",
2. go down with arrow key till you find "purge counter"
3. type "2783" this should set counter to "0"
4. press "stop/exit"
5. press "9" twice
6. remove cartridges from craddle
7. remove power cord
8. insert power cord back
9. switch on printer
10. insert cartridges back
if that do not work, then maybe really you need to replace absorbent sponge... it is done under warranty and if not technician in service centre.
if you want to do it yourself, remove cartridges, remove fron cover and on the right hand you will have "offending" sponge. either clean it (absorbent, lint free tissue is fine to remove excess first, then few drop of water and repeat draining process with tissue several time, at least till "cake" from the top is removed. best of course will be to replace the sponge with new one.
after that you still need to reset counter. in another way - follow steps...
