SOURCE: my xp pro os wont boot after running chkdisk at

Open XP in safe mode with command prompt.

Open a command window (start/run type cmd in the box then enter) and you will get the following.

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

You will then have a flasihg curser after

C:\Documents and Settings\PC name>

Type

CHKDSK /f /r

You will then get

C:\Documents and Settings\PC name>chkdsk /f /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) y

This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.

C:\Documents and Settings\PC name>

Type exit and restart.

make sure there is a space between each / and the previos word/command

The /f and /r do the following

/f: Fixes errors on the disk. The disk must be locked. If chkdsk cannot lock the drive, a message appears that asks you if you want to check the drive the next time you restart the computer.

/r: Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. Again the disk must be locked.

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} 0xc0000034 0x00000000 0x00000000 HELP?!

This is not an easy one to deal with if you don't have some things like a boot disk. The error is most likely caused by something that was installed or restored wrong. The best windows option is to use F8 and select last known good config. Then if it starts you can uninstall any software that you added just before this error..IF you cannot do that then you need to be able to boot to a separated disk and use file utilities to remove any programs that might be causing this.

Hi
It seems that the Hard Disk is disconnected from it's connectors
It needs to be fixed and installed correctly.
To do that, there are screws in the back, remove them and disconnect the hard disk, and reconnect, fix it correctly.
If it's difficult to you, go to technician to do that.

Please, Tell us your results.

Error "Setup didn't find HDD"

Well, first of all XP is not the latest supported operating system from Microsoft.

That being said, I have not had a garbled screen followed by an error message 'setup didn't find any hard disk drive installed' on a laptop, in my limited experience with laptops (i.e. Acer One, Acer Aspire, Sony Vaio, etc.)

If you have an unexpected garbled screen it points to the pc board or mother board or the video card, but more likely the motherboard.

And, if you couple this with the hard disk drive not being detected, it reminds me of a situation where I had a no hard disk drive detected on a SCSI drive connected to my Windows 95 computer in the 1990s when I had heat related issues with the circuitry on the hard drive getting burnt out capacitors.

If the drive is not recognized, it might mean the boot sector is wiped, and essentially it needs to be reformatted and the operating system needs to be reinstalled (which you evidently tried to do).

To my memory, I never had this problem on Windows XP with a laptop, so I am thinking it's not Windows that is at fault, but the physical hardware is giving you problems.

If you boot from the CD for Windows XP and it doesn't find the drive, it's a big problem for this laptop.

I wish you luck in finding an answer to that one, seeing that it's out of warranty and XP is no longer supported by Microsoft.com.

I have 2 HDD's in my PC - both with Win XP Prop

Boot.ini is correct, but looks default is booting from Disk2 and partition 1 which is your G:\ 500 GB.

Try Copying boot.ini from c:\boot.ini to g:\boot.ini It might help

In your example I see missing "\" after partition(1), may be typing mistake, but in real time can generate error.

You boot.ini looks exactly same in both drive c:\ & G:\

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="GUY DRIVE XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Note: boot.ini will be hidden and readonly file. You need to unhide the file and remote the read only option and then only you will be able to save the boot.ini file

Hope this helps

When booting the ds20 compaq server from system disk it brings an error saying scsi drive at channel 1 dead, target 0 dead and goes on to say the same for all the other disks

If you are sure the disks are ok (they could have been fried by a bad power source) then the SCSI chip is probably dead.Simple test: remove all hard disks and boot from the recovery disk. If you are lucky it will report all HDD channels operational and without disks. Insert another certainly good disk and boot again and see what happens.
If you're unlucky it will report the same thing - dead channels. In that case you will need at least a new SCSI card (they don't just die by themselves).

Can't boot windows xp

it sounds like the easiest solution would to either run the repair sequence from a windows xp disk (may not be a perminant fix) if that doesent work just use the xp disk to format the drive and install a new operating system

KOdak 2500 D -- cannot find target device

Go to Kodak's website and download the scan verification tool (the SVT), and see what it tells you. I use the 2500D with an Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller, and a 50-50 pin SCSI Cable.  I use the twain driver from Kodak's website and paperport 9 software.  This combination seems to work.
