Have a Kenmore 970-C42062-00 front loader that started to squeak during wash cycle. It then started banging loudly during the spin cycle. I've removed the lower front panel and inspected the shocks which look fine. I've also taken off the rear panel and everything appears fine. However when I manually spin the drum at the back of the machine, it clearly squeaks and bangs at one spot during the rotation. 10yr old washer. Can someone confirm the drum needs a replace, if so, I'm wondering if the cost means it would be better to replace the entire washer instead.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO TGRY TO PAY ATTENTION WHEN YOU LOAD THE CLOTHES IN. TRY TO LAYER THEM LIKE A CAKE AND NOT JUST TROW THEM IN. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM
SOURCE: thumping and banging
make sure all shipping pins are out the tub should move all around from side to side if it level still bangs its eather the balance ring top basket are there 3 slides on a plate above the motor just put some silacone oil on tham move around

With the lid open, set the cycle to spin and press the lid switch button with a pen. Wait until the drum gets to full speed and release the lid switch. If the drum makes a knocking/ thumping noise and doesn't stop spinning within 2-3 seconds, the basket drive block is worn and needs to be replaced. (The basket drive block is located on the gearcase drive shaft, under the tub and agitator) If this has been happening for a long time you may need to replace the brake and drive tube assembly as well.
Basket drive block part number is 389140
If that's not it, let me know and I will try to help you further.
Good luck!

I have the same problem...the solution is called new washer. I was told it could be overhauled to the tune about $600...barrings are going out. Mine is just 7 years old and that's disappointing.

2 possible issues with your washer.
1 or both the support shocks or springs have broken
the drum would look off center even when empty
or rear bearring has worn out.
this is a very common problem with the fridgidaire washer... (this kenmore is a frigidaire model)
problem is caused by very hard water (well water) or improper use of detergent. this machine uses a High efficency type detergent, marked by "HE" on the detergent container
