My loptop will not reconize the camera when I plug in the USB cord to computer
Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

It's an improperly installed driver for you device. Try going to safe mode and reinstall your camera drivers. Then try plugging it in first while the computer boots to see if it recognizes the attached camera...

i know it's not the answer you were looking for but i agree with the poster above. invest in a $10 all in one card reader and then forget about connecting your camera to your computer directly.
benefits of the card reader is they can be used for almost any type of card (memory stick, sd, compact flash, etc) so that any time you have friends or family over and want to download pics from their camera, you can.
i recommend the kingston FCR HS219.
good luck!
