It is not unusual for new appliances, espicially high heat ones like a dryer to smell hot. Also if this is your first gas appliance it might smell different than your old dryer if it was electric. Keep an eye on it when using it to see if you see any smoke. Also check your venting to make sure it is all clear with no blockage.
make sure vent is cleared MDG is a gas dryer so sometimes when theyre heating it may smell different than youre used to. blower impeller wheel has a "D" shaped hole & can round out causing it to hang up the motor which could cause a burning smell but usually will make a lot of noise B4 that will happen.
Mark, My name is Hal and having trouble understanding where you painted. Did you paint the inside of the drum? Or did you paint the house interior?
If you painted the inside of the drum did you use a high temperature paint? If not, that could be your problem since the dryer does get very hot inside and it could be melting your paint.

Can't help thinking that either you don't have the revised operating instructions, or the "Sensor Dry System" is not working properly. Download the revised instructions here [http://lgknowledgebase.com/kb/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=6231 ] and see if this helps. Otherwise have the sensors in the machine tested.
by all means when dealing with natural gas consult only trained professionals....as natural gas does not have an odor..the odor that you smell is an actually additive that has been place for just this reason.
Of course, this applies to gas dryers only. If you smell natural gas near your gas dryer, do not light matches or a lighter and don't operate electrical switches or anything that might spark, igniting an explosion.
Immediately shut off the gas valve that serves the dryer.
If the smell is mild, ventilate the area, wait until the air is clear, and re-light your pilot light.
If the smell is strong, move everyone outside, leaving the doors open to ventilate the house.
Turn off the gas supply valve --located by the gas meter on the gas inlet pipe-- by rotating the valve one quarter turn with an adjustable wrench. The valve's oblong stem should be perpendicular (at a right angle) to the inlet pipe to stop the flow of gas.
Call your gas supplier (or the fire department) from a neighbor's phone or a cellular phone outside the house.
