Have you checked all the other components used in the main power supply regulator section circuit, before replacing a new STR? You should do it. There should be a reason for the failure to STR. You should find it, and rectify it, before replacing an other STR. Check all the small components, resistors, zener diodes, small value ceramic capacitors etc: Make sure all of it are OK. Especially give a keen attention to zener diodes used; if any. Check all the associated components at the power supply regulator section circuit; especially check the zener diode/s. Replace them. Replace the STR only after replacing these components. You don't say what the recorder does do when you try to record. Any messages?
One possibility - You have to use CD-Audio or CD-Music media for consumer CD recorders.There are probably a zillion logos plastered somewhere on the unit that say what media are compatible with it.
Getting a schematic is rather doubtful. You might be able to get a general idea of the circuit from somewhere on the 'net.
Was the power supply dead?
ATX style power supplies have both a standby and main section. The standby supplies a low current +5 volts to a small portion of the motherboard.
If the component failure is in this section, this standby voltage will be missing or incorrect, and the computer will be dead- won't power on at all.
I've seen a number of catastrophic failures in this standby circuit, and repair isn't suggested or economically feasible, especially as some parts often poof beyond identification.

Voltages are precisely regulated, and any substantial deviation (more than a few 10ths of a volt) indicate a problem, especially on the +5 & +3.3 lines.
