Remember, the belt DOES NOT sit in the groove of the drum but about an inch from it in the direction of the front.
Also, the belt sits on the drum with the grooves facing away from the drum, not on the drum, a common mistake. If you have a new Genuine Maytag belt then there is a diagram of how the belt fits onto the tension pulley.

the idler pulley keeps tension on the belt itself, and is a complete unit,, it slides into a grove,, and once the belt is correctly installed ,, thats what holds it in place, heres a good reply from another question that may help you with pictures

The motor pulley usually has grooves and the gooves must match on that pulley. The belt goes around the drum gooves down thur the tensioner and on the motor pulley.

are you sure that you have it over the idler pulley correctly and motor pulley in the correct order???if not youll have slack in the belt as if it were too long,call store where purchased and make sure belt is correct, they may have given you wrong belt accidentally and while your at it maybe they can show you a diagram of belt placement on your machine,only 2 things i can think of can be wrong

Hi lesterjabbow;

A lot of these dryers have a long fiber belt that runs from a pulley on the motor thru a tension idler pulley and goes all around the drum. I suspect this belt is either broken or has come off the drive pulley on the motor. You can remove the back of the dryer easily with a 1/4 or 5/16 nut driver and immediately see if the drive belt is good. Any Maytag dealer will have a replacement part and it is easy to install

more information needed to specifcally match the model
however dryers are all similar so
generically, UNPLUG dryer

A:top mounted lint filter (kenmore maytag(New))

• remove lint filter
• remove screws in lint filter housing
• with putty knife or other flat blade depress lock tabs at front corners of top body panel
• tilt top panel up
• remove screws 1/3 way down each side, remove door switch wires
• remove front panel set aside

B:dryers with screws at bottom of front panel (maytag speedqueen)

• remove screws from bottom of front panel
• tilt front panel up
• remove door switch wires
• remove front panel set aside

All

• pull drum forward & out
• examine drum felts, rollers, and slides for wear replace if worn
• wrap new belt round drum at old wear marks
• insert drum
• wrap belt round motor pully
• pull tensioner pulley hard to end of travel against spring
• wrap belt round tensioner pulley
• release tensioner

reassemble

Remove the back panel, there you will find a tensioner, that will release the pulley.

Undo the belt routing and install the new one.

looking at the back of the motor where the belt pulley is you would grasp belt coming down from the left side of drum then come across the top of belt pulley that is on motor shaft going clockwise around that pulley then continue back to your left and over the top of belt tension pulley going counterclockwise around that pulley this is when you will have to raise pulley against spring pressure to get belt on then release belt tension pulley make sure that belt is still in belt groove on the drum hope this helps ed
