SOURCE: was running, hit a rock and now it won't start. grass was wet too
My guess is that the sudden stop has sheared the key that makes the flywheel turn with the crankshaft. (the key is a little sliver of metal that bridges a pair of slots cut into the end of the shaft and the bore of the flywheel. The flywheel is the large metal wheel that spins round on the top of the engine). Since the ignition timing is driven by the position of the flywheel, this does tend to stop the engine working.
The end of the shaft is usually tapered, making the flywheel a tight fit. Conequently, you will need a tool called a "puller" to get it off to put a new key in. Trying to hammer it off instead will just damage the magnets on the flywheel and make matters worse, so don't be tempted.
