When fishing the Delaware River for spring shad there is a pretty good current. My depthfinder will not consistently read the depth - let alone show fish. Most of time doesn't work at all. Spent an hour last year on phone with tech rep and they had it working somewhat. Have tried different transducers with same results.
Many depth finders don't work when the transducer sees a little turbulence. My only suggestion is to try different locations for the transducer, trying to guess where there will be the least turbulence beneath it. This is easy if your transducer is mounted inside the hull and reads through the hull. Not so easy if it is a through-hull mount. Be sure it is mounted correctly to the hull if it is mounted inside the hull.

SOURCE: How do you get the fish to show up on the screen
Are you looking for the little fish symbols?
Press MENU, down arrow to SONAR FEATURES and press ENT. Arrow to FISH SYMBOLS and press ENT. Press EXIT twice. Any significant return in the water will now show up as a fish symbol.
Are you looking for the fish arches?
You won't get any arches unless the boat is moving and of course there are fish passing within the transducers signal. The shallower the water, the less area you are covering and less likely to get a fish return.
There is an OK guide to understanding what you see on the sonar screen at the link below. It if pretty technical but parts of it may help you out.

An X96 owners manual can be downloaded from http://www.lowrance.com/en/Downloads/Manuals/
Check the mounting and cable connection of the transducer on the stern. If loose will tilt during movement, in reverse wakes from the prop. CAREFULLY check unit during these conditions. The transducer needs to be completely submerged. Good Luck.
SOURCE: my depth finder keeps loseing the bottom and just flickers the last reading
Hi, if this happens when stationery check the angle of the transducer, if it only happens when moving check the height of the transducer also. Regards Phil
