What type of software are you looking for? I currently use picasa for mac which is free, it allows you to organise your photos and gives you some editing facilities. Hope this helps.

It could be one of the USB connectors in the camera is not connected anymore. You need 2 contacts to send over the pictures (data) and 2 contacts to charge the battery. I would not worry about that. Just charge the battery in the external charger. I't won't be worth the cost you have to make to repair this. It is not likely your USB cable is defect, because the same contacts are used for power in the charger. Still you could try another USB cable, because the one you use now, could just work in the charger and just not in the camera.
The best way to download pictures and videos from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries. Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures and videos from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files.
Remove the SD card before connecting the camera to the computer. With the card installed, the computer will only show the videos and photos on the card.
