Hello,
Adjust the system's audio output settings. These settings are mainly
used when the system is connected to audio devices that support digital
audio output, such as AV amplifiers (receivers) for home entertainment
systems.
1.
Confirm the formats supported by your audio device.
Settings vary depending on supported formats. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the audio device.
2.
Select
(Sound Settings) under
(Settings) in the home menu.
3.
Select [Audio Output Settings].
4.
Select the input connector on the audio device. Channel numbers and
audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use.

Select audio output formats.
Select all output formats that are supported by the audio device in
use. If [Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI] is selected in step
4, the screen for selecting audio output formats will not be displayed.
If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically set the
audio output format. (In this case, the HDMI device must be turned on.)
6.
Check your settings.
You can go back to the previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the
button.
7.
Save your settings.
The audio output settings are saved on the system.
Hints
- [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio is set to be output from all output
connectors by default. If you change the audio output settings, audio
will be output only from the connectors that were set.
- If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer
be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same
time. For example, if your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI
cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and you switch
to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings], audio will no
longer be output from the TV. To output audio from the TV, switch the
setting to [HDMI], or select (Settings) > (Sound Settings) > [Audio Multi-Output] and set the option to [On].
- If you select [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch.
176.4 kHz] in step 5, sound may be intermittent or may not be emitted
from some audio devices.
- When using an HDMI cable, only [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio will be
output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software. To output
Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3™ system and the
audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out
(Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].
- If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth
Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using
an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.

Hope it helped.
I had the tv connected to the hopper via hdmi and from the hopper to my sony receiver via digital optical cable. I bought a blueray that only has hdmi so that is conneted it to the tv via hdmi as well. The light on my receiver used to be blue and say (digital optical 3/2) now that I ran the optical from my tv to the sony receiver it says stereo pcm. If I connect the optical cable back to the hopper, the light turns blue and says digital optical 3/2. Am I doing somthing wrong here? there is a slight audio difference, how do I get the digital 3/2 back? Thank you for helping.
Is there a spitter I can buy? My 42' lcd has a optical out, my Toshiba blueray has a coaxial audio out and my Dish Hopper has an optical out. My Sony strde725 receiver has 1 optical in, no place for a coaxial cable only RCA in/outs. Can I run them all together? I've attached a pic of the ports. Thank you!
They do make a two-to-one optical splitter but I have heard of people having problems when using them. It might be worth a try if that is your only option
