Question about Mtd Garden
I bought this tiller used and the guy installed a new shift fork and when he had it all back together it would'nt move. I got it home and tore it down and he had a few gears and spacers out of place, i got it back together and it will move forward and reverse and the tines turn, but as soon as i put some resistance to the wheels (like pull back on the handle bars when its moving forward) it stops and it sounds like a base ball card against the spokes of a bike inside the the transmission.
Adjust the spring tension on the ratchet assembly as you are supposed to be able top pull it back against the drive action

You will have to get into the gearbox. It isn't too hard but is time consuming. Sounds like the drive for the tiller has broken. Could just be the chain in the gearbox for the tiller drive.

SOURCE: tines wont turn
Without really knowing what is broken it will be tough to give a firm idea of the cost. However, you can head over to www.partstree.com. They have a great detailed parts break down and costs associated with it. Looked up your part numer and can find at this link: http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=mtd&mn=210-031-000+%281990%29

It sounds like the shift shaft or something in the gearbox the shift shaft engages. I know you didn't want to hear this but it is not uncommon. Most operators don't use the clutch bail when starting, stopping, and shifting as they should.
I hate to say it but this may require a trip to your service center for repair.
