i tried that, but i dont get the run as administrator option when right clicking. also shouldnt the comp. already know i'm the administrator, if i'm the only user on this comp. xp?

  • SANDRA Jun 20, 2009

i right click on the folder, properties, and nothing that says security comes up on there. i'm already the only user, and i checked and i'm the computer administrator. i went to the control panel and folders file, but nothing about permissions on there. when i right clicked and went to properties, i get 3 tabs. general, sharing, and customize. nothing under there with security or administrative or permission options.

  • SANDRA Jun 20, 2009

it says unable to log you on because of an acct. restriction. lol

  • SANDRA Jun 20, 2009

ok read somewhere that if i have xp home, i can only access administrator through safe mode. i did, and voila, administrator in. bad thing. i go to my folder, still says cant access. however, i right clicked, properties, and finally saw security tab. went to security, and where it says all the permissions, allow or deny, the bottom one says special permissions, and it's unchecked. but i cant check it. i have to go to advance option. i dont know where to go from there. any thougths?

Log in as administrator (built in account), go to the folder, right click, properties, security, see what the user permissions are and change them if your user account doesn't have full access. Then log back in as yourself and see if they work.

  • Anonymous Jun 20, 2009

Yeah, but Windows has a built in administrator account that you can log into. If you're doing 'auto logon', go to, start, log off. When it logs you off, do ctrl, alt, del twice and it should bring up a 'network' logon box. In the name box put in administrator, all lower case and the password if you created one when you first set up Windows. Most of the time, that password is blank. Then see if you can change permissions or take ownership of the file(s) on your user account. Once you try that log off and on as yourself again and see if it works. You may be able to open them while you're logged in as the administrator...?

Sorry, I forgot about the safe mode thing!?
From where you are, click advanced, administrator or administrators group, then o.k. The admin or admin group now owns the file.
For ownership of a folder, right click the folder, properties, security, then o.k. on security message if you get one.
Then, advanced, owner tab. In the name list click your user name or admin or admin group depending on how you're logged on. To take ownership of the folder contents, select replace owner on subcontainers and objects, it's a check box. Click o.k., then yes, you'll receive a message about replacing permissions, make sure that's what you want, then click yes.
Click o.k.then reapply permissions and security settings that you want.
I consulted Microsoft and played around with my own PC for this solution. I have done this before but it's not something that comes up all the time so I needed to refresh my brain!
    Good luck!

Well it could be a permission issue. Did you do all your updates once you reinstalled your xp copy? Try right clicking on the folder, and select run as administrator. Set your permissions to allow all. The click apply and ok then close the window and navigate away from your folder so it resets. Then try accessing the folder again. Let me know if this works for you.

As you reinstalled windows, some of the files have changed which would not necessarily confirm you as a use or the admin on the system. The file itself may be corrupted. I currently have the same issues with one drive with xp pro and the current one that I use which has vista. I am constantly having to reset the options for admin and sharing. Try the security tab through properties. You may have the ability to allow access via the security section.

  • Michelle Crabbe Jun 21, 2009

ok good we are making some headway. Now there should be more tabs if you go through the advanced option. There you can select, users admins etc. Your main log on should be selected. Make sure you set permissions for that log on. You may have to close the window and re-enter to view your selected log in and then set permissions for that log in. Its a real pain in the ****, but you may have to do that for any other folders you may need access too. I would recommend that once you do have access to that folder, to move the contents to a new folder. Or at least burn it to cd or disk and after saving all of your stuff from the drive, to completely reinstall windows to correct this error. Let me know if this works. I will keep checking in from time to time to see how things are going.

Glad to hear that you are getting closer to accessing your file.

Can I change my windows 7 computer to XP with an XP disk

yes --
But you will loose all of your files and folders when you format the hard dive to install win xp
you cannot run 2 operating systems on the one hard drive unless the hard drive is partitioned ( in effect having 2 hard drives on the one disc) as it causes massive conflicts in operation
Why any one would install an out dated , unsupported operating system like win xp in place of win 7 beats me
of course if you insist in doing it you could always install and extra hard drive in the computer and run it as an extra hard drive and install the win xp on it and still retain all of your files and folders

YES, I HAVE A HP COMPAQUE NC6000,WITH INTEL PENTIUM INSIDE. I HAVE LOST MY WEBROOT AND I'VE COME UP WITH MANY VIRUSES IN MY COMPUTER. THE SECURITY TOOL SAYS I HAVE WORMS,TROJANS,MALWARE AND PEOPLE TRYING...

what is the security program you have installed
it should have a scan section that you can order up a deep scan ( can take up to 6 hours ) that will isolate all malicious programs and allow you to delete or fix problems
if you have a good back up of all of your files and folders , reformat the hard drive as everything is on the hard drive
time to up grade to win 7 anyway as there are security fixes that are no longer suitable for the win xp os
microsoft stopped supporting win xp around 2 years ago so if you have been relying on win security it is well out of date

Cant access files...

Boot up into safe mode, logging in as the Administrator, not your account.

Go into the security settings for the folder and change the permissions. The easiest thing would be to give Everyone full access. Don't forget to promulgate the permissions to the directory tree as well.

Good luck

God Bless

I cannot launch photo explosion 3.0 on my Win xp

I found that to be the problem, To many pictures in your folder. My photo explosion deluxe 3 opens up to C/pictures. the program fails, times out, because it takes to long to load all those pictures, I moved my pictures from C/pictures to C/photos folder. You may be able to use any other folder. It worked like magic. Opened fast with no delay. I had installed and uninstalled 25 times or more with no luck. also deleted and folder( u lead ) from the c/ windows/ ulead, while I was uninstalling things.
I had help here. was asking Jesus to help me figure this out 2 months or more , Finally the answer just popped in my head , I,m not smart about pc. So i know he helped me. So I share with you Jesus and the answer to this problem that drove me crazzzzy!!!

If this helps you, thank the Lord Jesus.
