Check that the choke isn't stuck...should be a small curved pin you slowly pull in and out. Check your manual for its location. If its stuck in one position that could be your problem. If you can't find your manual, do an online search; usually you can download one.

SOURCE: What type of oil for a Coleman 5000 Generator?

You need a quart of regular old SAE 5W30 motor oil with detergent.
The engines on these generators are more or less the same as a lawn mower.
Don't forget to service/change the air cleaner when you change the oil, that should keep your generator producing full power.

Regards,
Carl

SOURCE: Coleman Powermate 10 HP Generator shuts down after a few minutes.

I have an HM100 on a 5500 watt gen with the same problem. This motor calls for a J17 spark plug, but I found using a J19 (hotter) plug solved the problem. I think the J17 doesn't get hot enough for a complete combustion burn so it act like fuel starvation thus resulting in the black sooty and wet plug.

Most likely the excitation DC circuit is broken or exciting rectifier (AVR if present) is damaged. If the field has been demagnetized it can be recharged by a 12 V battery, connected for a short time to +, - of the excitation winding, with engine running.

I have a powermate 5000, it is putting out 330 volts on the 240 side/165 on the 120 side? what could be the cause of this?

There can be nothing but a bad voltage regulator in the end of the generator. They are getting harder to find. Robert

Generator wont idle up when a load is applied to the system. If you manually throttle it up it makes power fine, but it won't idle up on it's own.

Are you sure your gen.set is Coleman. The 5000 W gensets of Coleman as far as I know do not have auto idling. If your has, check this:
If by the same load it was accelerated ones (before) you may have problem with current measuring circuit.

Try does it run up with bigger load. It may not go up with loads less than 100 W. It has a big hystheresis on droping down (at less than, about 50 W) and running up (at more than 100 - 150 W).

If this can not help you give some more details in testimonials field in order to give you more instructions.

Hello, I have a Coleman Powermate 5000/6250W and I can not fing the oil drain plug. There is one oil dip stick on each side of motor. Starting to feel like a dip stick myself.

I worked at a tool rental while attending college and have felt the same way as you when looking for oil drain plug on various tools. Some engines do not have a plug and you must tilt the engine to get the oil out. Others had a plug but could remove it so had to tilt anyway. Most small engines had the plug along the edge of the base of the engine. Look where the engine mounts to the frame of the generator. The engine block is about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch thick there and usually has a 1/2 " square head plug. The oil drains very slow thru that hole. Some gen sets had a small tube (4 - 5 inch ) attached to drain hole that made it easier to catch oil. Good luck.

Three year old coleman 5000/6250 generator. High

Your RPM's are too high. There is no voltage regulator in coleman generators (generator is actually made by generac) and is 100% dependent on engine speed. There is a screw under the tank when your looking in from the recoil side. It controls the governor arm. Screw it in and it incresses the rpm, out decrease. Plug something in that draws a decent load while setting the rpms since you want it to put out 120 and 240 underload. Your idle voltage does not matter.

Generator doesn't excite with small power tools.

Somewhere on the Generator is an Idle Control switch, turning this to the off position will stop the generator idling down in the first place. You'll need to do this to use tools that don't draw enough current to trip the idle control system into revving the engine.
It may say just how much current you have to draw in the manual (hint, hint).
