SOURCE: What type of oil for a Coleman 5000 Generator?
You need a quart of regular old SAE 5W30 motor oil with detergent.
The engines on these generators are more or less the same as a lawn mower.
Don't forget to service/change the air cleaner when you change the oil, that should keep your generator producing full power.

I have an HM100 on a 5500 watt gen with the same problem. This motor calls for a J17 spark plug, but I found using a J19 (hotter) plug solved the problem. I think the J17 doesn't get hot enough for a complete combustion burn so it act like fuel starvation thus resulting in the black sooty and wet plug.

Most likely the excitation DC circuit is broken or exciting rectifier (AVR if present) is damaged. If the field has been demagnetized it can be recharged by a 12 V battery, connected for a short time to +, - of the excitation winding, with engine running.
