There are more about 10 different cartridges for Hp PSC 1610 All-In-One printer. The most common used cartridges are 94 (black), 95 (color) and 99 (photo). You can find out all the available cartridges for your printer from this site (click here). You can even buy them from the website.
Follow this link to the owner's manual for your PSC 1610. Look for page 66 in the lower left corner and begin reading from there. That will show you how to do it.

Driver could be corrupt. Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off.
I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with
the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the
printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
No, HP 98 works on Officejets, designjets and Photosmart printers.
If it is still in the box, and un-opened, they will take it back without the receipt and exchange it for the one you need.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe
Ink should not affect the scanning. Try turning the printer off then back on and rebooting the computer. Sometimes that does the trick.
Also, I'd suggest updating your software/drivers from hp's site. www.hp.com

Did you insert the #99 cartridge in place of the Black cartridge?
