Most likely the Duracell Battery in there is corroded and had fused itself to the inner aluminum wall of the light. MagLite warranties their flashlight if damage from a battery was caused by either a Duracell, Ever-ready or Ray-O-Vac battery. Same thing happened to me, I brought it to their Repair Center in Ontario, CA and they tried to remove the battery while I waited, they couldn't remove it so the gave me a brand new flashlight.
