You need a watch battery that can be bought at any drugstore or grocery store. It is LR44 or A76 size battery. Install the battery and tighten the little black cover and you'll be timing your workouts right away.

SOURCE: Does any one clean the Schwinn Air Dyne bikes, I

Hi-The best way to clean an Airdyne is to use a power washer on it. I take mine outside on the driveway once a year and give it a good power washing and all the dustthat gathers on the fan and anything else just gest power washed right off the bike. I spray the entire bike, all the gook from the spokes and any grease on the chain or sprokets all gets washed away. I wipe it down and take it back inside and it looks like new.

What is the wheel circumference of older 1988 AirDyne to use for bike computer to replace Schwinn ergometer?

The wheel circumference of a 1988 Schwinn AirDyne exercise bike may vary depending on the specific model and tire size. To determine the wheel circumference for your bike computer, you'll need to measure it directly. Here's how you can do it:
  1. Measure the Tire Diameter: Lift the front wheel of the bike off the ground so it's freely spinning. Use a tape measure to measure the diameter of the tire from one side to the other. Make sure you measure the actual tire, not the rim.
  2. Calculate the Circumference: Once you have the diameter in millimeters, you can calculate the circumference using the formula: Circumference (mm) = ? (pi) x Diameter (mm).
    • You can approximate ? as 3.14 for simplicity.
  3. Convert to Centimeters or Meters: To make it more compatible with most bike computers, you might want to convert the circumference from millimeters to centimeters or meters.

User Guide/Manual for Schwinn Airdyne AD3

Schwinn Fitness has many of their manuals here: http://www.schwinnfitness.com/schwinn_fitness_us/customerservice/manualsen.jsp . The direct link to the owner's manual for all Airdyne exercise bikes is available here: http://download.nautilus.com/supportdocs/OM/Schwinn/SCH_Airdyne_Evolution_OM_web.pdf . If you need the assembly directions, see the Airdyne AD4 guide: http://download.nautilus.com/supportdocs/AM/Schwinn/SCH.Airdyne.AD4.AM.EN.pdf . The AD3 and AD4 are very similar.

I hope this helps.

Load indicator and odometer and spedometer just quit working. Bike is ancient-circa 1988-but otherwise works well.

Same here. Can't find the part online. Local Schwinn dealer said they haven't made that part in at least 10 years. I put on a regular bicycle Cateye odometer. At least I have a measure, although it does feel like it agrees with the Schwinn odometer, even when I set the wheel size to just 100 cm I think it is still ~20% high.

Owner's manual for older Schwinn Airdyne

http://support.nautilus.com/support/schwinn/uprightbikes/prdcdovr~3550012/Schwinn+Airdyne+Exercise+Bike.jsp
Follow this link and you can download the owners manual as well as the exploded parts schematics. There will be information about the different years. other than the consoles they have remained the same for 20 + years. If you ever need to replace the bottom bearing be sure to get the lock ring as well. It changed from left hand thread to right. Thats it. You can also upgrade the console to the newer version. A little expensive but with proper care a 20 year old Airdyne will last till the frame rusts out from under it.
