I recently purchased a HP 500-214 Pavilion. I exchanged it for a different one after less than a week because every time the screen changes, the computer makes a squeaking sound (not a fan noise, but a metallic squeaking sound). I have had the replacement for less than two days and the noise is present in this pc as well. The sound also occurs when I was downloading a printer driver that took about 20 minutes. I work in a almost silent room, so the noise is bothersome. The pc that I just replaced didn't make noises like this (but it was OLD). Do all of the new pc's make this noise? Should I try to exchange it yet again? Should I try to find another computer that will meet my needs? (Another issue: Unfortunately, I purchased a gift card through our child's school to purchase the computer at Best Buy and will only get the money put back on a gift card.)
No, not all new computers make this squeaking sound. It may be a defect of one of the internal components of the machine, and it may be present in all of those same models. You could try to replace it one more time, and then talk to Best Buy about using the gift card to buy a different computer model.

First of all, dont go with a name brand and you wont have to deal with the company BS. you can build (or have built) a better computer from someone like tigerdirectdotcom and save a couple hundred dollars. granted you will have to buy an operating system for it , but you will want a system disk to reinstall the next time it crashes. Remember.. it's not IF your computer will crash , it's WHEN. I would be happy to recommend some parts or at least a barebone starter box if you tell me what you want to use the computer for..no reason for overkill..
Maybe you need a larger power supply depending on if you might have added more hardware such as a graphics card, or an extra monitor to your system. This sometimes results in an inefficient supply of power, making your fan to your power supply work harder, thus making noise.
Windows 8.1 OS is the biggest piece of garbage to come down the pike since Ford came out with Edsel. Do yourself a big favor and take it back - see if you can get another unit with Win 7 installed. Some manufacturers give you the option of going back to 7 if the unit comes with Win 8. Check that option out also.
