You have to make sure that the pump is flowing enough water to activate the Stiebel. The tankless unit has a activation rate of a certain amount of water to turn it on.

SOURCE: heating unit in a stiebel eltron electric instant hot water heater went bad and I have to replace the unit. How difficult is that?

You will have to drain the tank, make sure when doing this to OPEN the pop off valve, the little handle on the drain pipe, or the water will not drain.
