That is caused 99 percent of the time by the fuser.
There is a solid aluminum roll and a silicon rubber ( pressure) roller in the fuser. The pressure roller either developes some flat spots from park ( non running) time and over time heat and use cause it to deform and become out of round. What then happens is when the paper enters the fuser it does so with a slight twist, and the pressure of the fuser, for lack of a better term, Irons in that crease during the fusing process.
Gave the explaination so you would understand what is happening.

What code is comming up with the jam? That would help me narrow it down for you.

Are the paper tray settings correct? If you have the tray mis adjusted, such as the tray thinks it has 14 inch paper in it and it has 11 inch, it will just shut down like that.
Make sure the settings are correct on the computer and the printer.
Also, its unlikely but the latch for the load springs in the fuser may be unlatched, but you shold NOT be able to close the covers like that.

That would be the drum 99% of the time. A fuser is what heats up the paper and the toner so it will stick properly. If it is "smudging" then its the fuser. But is it is lines sometimes with dots in them that is a bad drum.
start a print from tray 1/manual feed and just as the trailing edge of paper is entering the machine; quickly open it to stop print and take out the cartridge and look at it's drum and the paper underneath. If the issue is there at that point then it would point to loose toner residue underneath the cartridge. if not then the fuser area has to be cleaned. Wipe the area clean with a lint free cloth, do not use compressed air.....
